So I'm getting ready to do a front brake job on my '07 Versa, and noticed that in the service manual diagram, there are two flat shims mounted to the back of each brake pad. The service manual makes it look as though these shims are removable, but as far as I know most of the pads on the market come with a shim permanently fused to the metal backing on the pad.
Of course, Nissan will sell me a hardware kit, for something like $40-$60 depending on where I get it from, but is it really necessary? All the pads I've seen that say they come "with hardware" or "with shims" include the thin aluminum shims that hold the pads into the caliper bracket, but not new shims for the back of the pad.
