i just ordered a set of HAWK HPS brake pads front and rear for my '92 300zx but as i tried to replace them, the rear pads didnt seem to fit. the metal clippings on the HAWK brake pads were bigger than the OEM ones. and because of that.. i didnt seem to fit in the calipers.. I'm almost positive i got the right set for my year.. am i doing something wrong? sorry if this question is stupid. thanks for your time

The metal clip you have circled is just the "warning clip." The only purpose it has is it makes a squealing noise when your pad gets low enough and it starts to make contact with the rotor.

Maybe you installed them wrong?

Try switch sides. They should fit.

i managed to make the pads fit but now as i drive, i can step on the brake pedal all the way down.. does anyone know how to fix that? brake fluid is about the right level.. maybe i need to bleed my brakes? if so, how would i do that?

no offence, but take your car to a shop and let them fix it, first you couldn't get the pads in and now you somehow got air int he system, so either you opened a bleeder or you have a problem, either way let a professional fix it before you get in a wreck it'll cost less to get it fixed than to pay to have the remains towed away

Sounds like you got air in the system. Here is a write-up on how to bleed your brakes:

I understand you wanting to learn but if you don't get the brakes fixed and working you coud get hurt or worse, the question is how did you get air in the system? was the pedal sift before you "fixed" it? did you open the bleeder valve? I am all for do it yourself but given your results thusfar I'd suggest you at least recruit someone more knowledgable to help you
