I have a 93 240sx with 83k miles. I just installed hawk carbon street pads and had the rotors turned, but when I installed the pads, I re-used the old hardware (spacers/shims on the back of the pad)... It now makes a squeaking/screeching noise while driving, but as soon as you apply ANY pressure on the pedal it goes away. Its almost as though the pad is wobbling and hitting the rotor as it turns. It doesn't happen all the time, and it seems to be worse over bumpy roads...

I'm almost sure new hardware (shims, etc.) will fix it, but I'd like Scott's opinion before I go grab some. Maybe use more of that lube on the calipers too? It doesn't seem to affect stopping performance, so I never really worried about it, but its just really annoying to squeak my way down the road!:)

Thanks,Sean

get some anti squeal at naparemember, more aggresive pads will be louder.

it will still tack up and keep them from vibrating extremely fast. otherwise, the new hardware will probobly help

It sounds like your hitting brake sensors. that is exactly what they do when they hit, once the brake is applied it stops the vibration of the sensor/indicator. If you only installed the pads on front check the rear brake pads and see if they are hitting the sensor or vise versa.

If you find the sensors not the source of the noise check to make sure your hardware isnt hitting the rotors center hub area and when you apply the brakes the shift of the caliper pulls it away from the hub. I have seen this on many cars with aftermarket pads that the hardware doesnt fit properly on.

One other thing you could check is if you have the return springs that span across the 2 pads attached in little holes where the pad backs up against the caliper. check to make sure that isnt rubbing the rotor in the center. You can usually see that if you look through the hole in the caliper.[this is only if you have those springs, some nissans dont have them, not sure if yours does or not.]

If its not a part scraping problem, usually spraying a lubricant on the shims/plates does the trick. I believe its a silicone spray.
