Hi folks,

I did the front brakes on a 2013 Rogue last weekend. The rotors looked pretty good, and were thick enough to machine. They were uneven in thickness before machining, though. So, had them turned at the local Pep Boys, washed them, and installed new Monroe ceramic pads that were supposed to be comparable to OE, with new clips. Took it out for a test drive afterwards, and the brakes were good and they were quiet.

Now, a couple of days later, I can hear noise while driving as if the rotor is a bit out of flat, and there's a squeak (more from the left, but a bit from both sides) when starting off, and when braking. Turning the wheel a bit seems to exaggerate it.

Wheels were torqued evenly, by hand, to the 80lb spec.

Any ideas what I missed here?

Thanks,
Paul

Did you break in the pads and mate it to the rotors with hard stops. Really mash into those new brakes.

Or add some of that red stuff like I did to stop noise.

Used it to prevent noise when I changed my brakes and rotors recently. :mike

Yes, did some hard stops to seat the pads. I don't think pad backing stuff will be helpful here, since it's got that rotor runout type of noise going on. I may try it, though...

Runout sound is either an uneven rotor (which you knew) or debris on the mating surface. Pull the rotor and clean the hub well, as well as inside of rotor.

Bedding brakes is more than just "hard stops" - it's a process, there are lots of ho-to articles all over the web.

Exaggerated noise with the wheels turned is a bigger concern. Make sure it's not something silly, like brake shield rubbing on rotor.

The hubs were clean. The left one is new - replaced it during the service. And the noise was not there initially. Started after some miles of driving... which sounds to me like the rotors warped after a bit of use. These rotors are not original, but came with the car, so I don't know the brand. Are there any that are known to warp that easily?

Most anything made in China. I like Bosch rotors, last time I bought them they were still made in Europe.

Bosch rotors and Made in USA akebono pads.

Doubtful you warped a rotor that easily. It's a Rogue, the rotors aren't getting to that temperature without extended aggressive use.

My guess is there's insufficient lubrication on the pins and slides, and once the pads made contact, they're scuffing on a poorly-resurfaced rotor.

OK. Removed the pins, cleaned them, and gave them a good amount of grease. Also added more grease to the slots in the clips. That seems to have corrected the squeal... but we'll see. They were quiet initially as well.

The rubbing sound was indeed the splash guards. Pushed them back a bit, and that noise is gone.
