I just got home from work, drove 24 miles of interstate, in the fast lane, and I think my brake lights were on the entire time.

I didn't notice until I parked in the garage and closed the door. I tried everything, wiggled pedal, pumped it, tried to pull fuse to stop car from killing battery, but I can't get the son of a b**** out.

I am at my wits end this week, and this was the last thing I was hoping to have to deal with. Anyone have this issue? I heard there is a switch, but I can not see it. I am 6'7" and got a hurt knee. I about killed myself poking my head under there. Any advice about getting the switch fixed or pulling the damn fuse would be greatly appreciated.

This week...

There is a brake light switch and a cruise cancel switch at the brake pedal. There should be a rubber bushing of some sort on the brake switch that could have disintegrated. Look for it on the floor mat, you might be able to find it and get a definitive answer.

There should be a fuse puller in the fuse area behind the driver coin tray. Check for one and use that to pull the fuse out.

The bushing was on the floor mat, but I can't quite get up under the dash to see what I am doing, and feeling around is fruitless.

I went ahead and disconnected the battery for now. Going to see if I can find the part for it, or figured out a solution. I also had my A/C button break off this week..... I have to use tweezers to turn it on.

If you want an OEM part number, provide your VIN and I can look it up. Otherwise, most parts stores should carry aftermarket options for the brake light switch.

Was a resolution ever discovered for this issue? This just started happening in the last few days on my 2013 Nissan Pathdinder SL. The brake lights won't go off at all. Headlights off, vehicle off, pressing brake pedal. Turning car on moving it back off nothing. Seems to only happen at night. During the day the lights don't illuminate consistently.

The problem is the stop lamp relay has shorted out. The information is contained in NTSB15-111. The dealer has to replace the relay and rewire some things. My car is going in the shop 3-28-16 to be repaired. It's going to cost about $180.00 to have the work done!!!!!

It seems that I may be going through the same problem, Now this is not the switch, it's a relay you needed to change out? Did this fix the problem?
Thanks any help would be great

I would bet you $5 your relay is not the issue and is fine. The little stopper caps/bushings dry out over time, crack, then fall out. You should be able to see my replacement in the photo... one is for cruise control brake cutoff and one is for the brake light itself. When the cruise control one cracks you wont be able to engage cruise because the car will think you are braking, and when the brake one falls off the brake lights will constantly be on. Get under the console with a coin, hit the brake, and shove a coin in there. That will temporary turn the brakelights off - the coin will fall out when you drive though, so only a temporary solution.

This is the part you need if you want to do it by the book: Nissan 46512-H0101 OEM Rubber Stopper for Brake Light - You can see by my photo the green nob looking thing. You also should be able to see in my photo my homemade contraption. I took a plastic wine cork and cut 2 slivers out. I threaded one through a small screw and popped that in the cap, and then screwed the other sliver on the other end. It does the same thing as the cap and cost me $0.
