I would think it's quite obvious that you are not in the Altima section, but since it is not, apparently, here is a link.

as in the indicator light in the dash?

I assume this happens on start up and no other time right?

It might be that your brake light switch is sticking closed?

Are you still on the original brake pads? My guess is the fluid is low because the pads are mostly gone. This happened to me as well. Adding fluid or replacing the pads should take care of it.

Brake fluid expands from heat/friction on the brake pads, cools off and contracts when car sits.

Get a brake job.

While AppleBonker has the right idea, I wouldn't recommend adding brake fluid if you haven't changed the pads. Remember to resurface or replace the rotors too. Prolly best if you do a fluid flush as well.

Better yet, Dattebayo is right -- have an experienced mechanic do it.

Yeah, I didn't explain very well. If your fluid is low, there is likely a problem. Fortunately, that problem is most likely that the pads are about gone and is an easy fix. Adding fluid will make the light go off, but it doesn't resolve the problem that caused the light to illuminate in the first place. And if your rotors are anything like the ones on the coupe, it's probably a good idea to resurface them if you haven't already.

you're in the right place though, despite what some of use other users argue about and dumb comments, you'll find help and information here :)

as previously asked, have you ever had the brakes worked on since you've owned the car?

it wouldn't surprise me at all with that kind of mileage to still be on the original pads. (and ready for a new set to be put on)

Tire fluid could be low. Have you switched out the summer air for winter air in the tires?

I have a 2003 Xterra super charged 4X4! My check engine light has been on with O2 codes and Knock sensor codes.
Now my brake light sensor on the dash has been staying on after I start up. I can drive a few miles then it goes off.
It stays off till I have to park. It is an automatic. Brakes were checked. Now checking fluid but it seems to be full.
Hard to see in it, it is dark to fill line but could be stained over the years. Worried my Master cylinder is going.
Left front hub bearings replaced a few months ago, However there is still play in the wheel. Any suggestions on what's up with brake light sensor. I'm also wondering if with the age and miles 122,000+ that maybe my sensors are just starting to go. I also have been pulling a trailer!

see, it sounds like a joke, but I'll be damned if winter air isn't a lower pressure. temperature be whack.
