Brake Lights

I have just purchased this 2000 I30 for my daughter. I am having Problems with the brake lights. They don't work all the time. We have to use the shift lock out at times to get the car out of park. After some investigation it seams that if you hit the brake pedal fast and hard the lights will work and you can shift out of park. Braking slowly and sometimes they will work but most of the time not. I have followed her arround to watch the brake lights work while driving and it is the same sometimes they will work but mostly not. My 1st thought is the brake light switch but before i go to replacing parts would like to hear some suggestions from others.

I'm not sure about the I30 but on an 01 maxima there are 2 parts, the foot pedal switch and the relay for the shift lock. Climb under the pedal and push the switch, if you get lights but it won't shift it's the relay. If you don't get lights and no shift it's the pedal switch. If you get lights and shift you just need to adjust the position of the pedal switch. My relay went out and Nissan wanted $80. for the relay, $60. for the switch + labor. They are both easy to replace, but very time consuming and require a lot af patience (Nissan designs all areas for child size hands with superman strength) If you still have any questions post 'em. Better to wait a day for answers than spend needless money at the stealership.

Hi,

I have the same problem in my 2001 I30 and was wondering how you took care of yours.

In the response to your posting - "Climb under the pedal and push the switch" - I could not see any switch near the brake pedal.

Any help will be appreciated.
