This is quite possibly the weirdest electrical gremlin I've seen yet. For some reason, my brake lights stay on all the time, regardless of anything. Car on, car off, lights on, lights off. I have the fuse for them pulled now, but since it's UBER-unsafe to drive without brake lights I'd like to get it done quick. Anyoen have any clue what could cause this before I get to go hunting with the multi-meter??

If you have a Q45...there is a break relay in the trunk. you just have to take off the plastic around the rim.... a couple of screws to push back the lining.

I believe the part is purple in color...It may be worth your while to unscrew it..unplug it.... and possible cleanup the contacts...

I had a problem with one and did the old engineering trick and smacked it..

That worked for a while...eventually got a used part...

Works fine now...

****ing newb

I just covered this about 2 weeks ago and gave a newb hell... I have covered this about 4 or 5 damn times now... Dont preach what you arent practicing......

Edit: I had this problem in my girls 92 about 3 months back.... I came on here, SEARCHED and found the answer in 5 mins... Never once asked about it yet found the info in the forum and it worked... Since then, like I said, it has come up many times... There was only one thread on it I found then but I found it...

You have been revoked of your right to tell people to search :)

i had the same problem. yeah you can search for it, but ill give up 2 seconds of my time answer it. its probably the liitle brake switch that is where your brake pedal is. go look under the dash and your pedal and youll see a black switch that screws on and makes contact with the pedal itself. it has 2 wires with a little blue connector on it. remove that, curse many times because your back will hurt, and take it out and replace it.

Ahhh fine its either the switch is bad on the pedal like stated or the grommet that depresses the switch in when the pedal is at rest has deteriorated and fallen out.

Ill go for the grommet as it is a very common issue, as it hardens and cracks. Youll see a hole and the stop lamp switch going into a hole, if the grommet has busted, vs the switch resting on the grommet of course, if it is good.

Only reason I am typing this as my last post on this was deleted... I forgot about that. The ****er that started the post deleted it after I ragged on him then gave him the answer anyway... Selfish prick asks for info, gets his feelings alittle hurt but gets his info, then deletes it so no one else can get such info.

edit: you know Im just razzing you.... right??? Oh and by typing "brake and lights and on" for the 240 section I found many threads on this :)

I'll be damned, you'd think as much as I'm on here I'd have seen that, you were totally correct. It appears I've been owned by the search function......

Your puny brake light problems make me laugh. I had a Saturn in that had a melted instrument panel wiring harness. The root cause was the turn signal switch. I installed a new switch and new harness. When I connected the battery, the dash lights came on as if the key was in the run position. I disconnected the ignition switch and the problem remained. After removing much of my hair, I found that when the brake pedal was depressed the lights would go out. It turns out that the new wiring harness had 4 wires going to the brake switch reversed. The power from the brake switch was backfeeding trough the pcm and i/p cluster. Aren't cars fun!!

I was talking to someone about this brake light foible and they asked if that spoke bad for Nissan. I said as a comparison if it had been a ford it would have melted, caught on fire, took the quickets route possible to the bumper mounted gas tank and exploded.

This isn't just a 240sx problem, the first time I ran into it was about 6 years ago on an older 300zx. There is a small plastic bushing that goes in a hole above your break pedal arm. This thing dry rots and falls out. With this bushing gone, there is nothing to depress the brake light swtich so it always stays on.

DO NOT go out and buy another bushing from nissan. I've found that the best way to do this and make it permanat, is to use a bolt and nut. Run a bolt with a head larger than the hole through the hole from the bottom, and twist the nut onto it from the top. Make it tight so it doesn't fall out, then, while someone is watching your lights, back the break light switch out to adjust it until the lights come on as soon as you press the pedal.

I've done this to 3 240s and 2 300s and never had any problems afterwards. Metal doesn't tend to dry rot either.
