The brake light in my 92 Q came on, and sometimes goes away. The fluid level looks normal. The pedal feels rather mushy. Even though the fluid level is correct, is a leaky master cylinder still possible?

Im going to take a closer look this weekend and do a brake flush.

How old is your alternator? The brake light will flash when failure is imminent.

since the pedal feels mushy i would assume its unrelated....

Have you had to add any fluid recently?

Alternator is original but still good. The "christmas lights" that are supposed to occur during an alternator failure haven't yet.

I havent had to add fluid ever, at all.

Could some pre-existing pocket of air have moved around? I flushed the brakes from the two from calipers last winter. Havent flushed the rears yet since buying the car in '03.

You mean the "BRAKE" LED is on? An air pocket can cause a mushy pedal, but the LED is controlled by the float switch (or parking brake switch). It may need to be cleaned or replaced. Pull the screen and lift up on it to see if the light goes out. So as far as you know the rears may never have been flushed since rolling off the factory line? You could be in for a black sludgy treat.

Just an update for anyone searching NICO in the future:

We looked for master cylinder leaks and found none. The fluid level was proper where I last left it. We did a bleed and slight flush on both rears, and what came out was clean, consistent, and hazel-colored like fresh brake fluid.

Last fall when I flushed the fronts, however, I got a lot of white and brown sludge.

So, at the moment, the brakes are firm and proper, not counting warped rotors. We'll see after a few days if bleeding took care of the problem.

Aaacccck! I would be doing another complete flush this afternoon!

Does not portend well for the future of the ABS pump.
