First of all, hey people. Its great to be in a car community for people like me that own my car.

After looking at the Audi R8 lighting on the front that some poeple have done, I got to thinking, how about putting them on the back. I will post with pictures but here is my plan. You know the LED lights you see come on when people brake their truck? You usually see them bellow the tailgate, well I wanted to buy 2 1 ft long oznium strips, and tape them to the outside of the taillight, behind the trunk lid. There is a gap between the trunk and taillight that woud be just big enough to have a brake light strip.

I have already removed the taillight and see where i can run the wire. Under the carpet in the trunk there is a group of wires. The two that are running to the main taillight are green, one has a white stripe, the other has a yellow stripe. There is also a rubber stopper that holds the wires that goes to the taillight assembly, and I can squeeze the 2 wires for the taillight through that.

My main concern has been watertight, and keeping the wires as dry as possible. With that said, how do you guys think? Ill send pictures when I get them, but I am ordering them today!

welcome to the forums. this place is great so stick around. there are always ideas floating around, group buys for hot products, and all kinds of help from the guys around here. so welcome!

i actually had the same ideas of putting red LED strips somewhere along the back i just haven't had my coupe back from the shop to do some homework on it. you have a good idea so if you come up with somethin post pics! i'll be doing some experimenting when i get the coupe back. mainly on interior lighting. cup holders, under the dash, under the seats, but nothin too crazy.

keep us posted!

Welcome!

Not a bad idea! And keeping wires watertight isnt an issue, HEATSHRINK tubing works! you also may be able to run the wires so that the "meet" of the wires coming off the leds connecting to the wires is deep inside the car already to prevent any issues...

Although water will "follow the wire" and trickle down... some silicone will stop it in its tracks! Maybe drilling a small hole thru the black housing of the taillight, and sealing that hole with silicon will work best!

Cant wait to see!

The Oznium red strips arrive.

After removing the taillight assembly...

...and hotglueing the ends (silicone works too, but I used what I had)

I poked a test light in the wires to see which one was the brake, which was the green and yellow wire

Solder the wires and electric tape

Tape the strip JUST behind the taillight edge along the edge

The finished result. ENJOY!

Looks good. I'm wondering where the next place people are gonna slap on LED's is gonna be.

1. Grill Lights2. Turn Signals 3. Head Lights4. Tail Lights

This is getting a bit out of hand, lol

did you think about running the LED's all the way along that line of the headlight instead of stopping at the top of the trunk??

i feel like it looks incomplete the way you left it . . .

Assuming that you have a 2.5 you wont be able to swap out for 3.5 mirrors because the 2.5 doesnt have the wiring for it. It only has 3 wires and the 3.5 has 7.. I wanted to do the same thing but when i checked mine it wasnt compatable. You may be able to do it but you have to run extra wires for it.

DJDevine nice work man... not quite my taste for the rear but you got me thinkin about how that concept would look on the headlights, instead of goin underneath em like everyone has done so far.

i actually feel the same way. i was a little disappointed. maybe continue running the lights along the top might make it look a little better.

So are the Coupe 2.5's wired dufferently than the Sedan 2.5'? I know some 2.5 Sedans have the wiring for it and some 2.5's don't. Don't remember if it wqas a 2007 vs 2008 Sedan thing or if it was a base package vs convenience package thing... but I know for a fact that some 2.5 Sedans have the wiring for the 3.5 mirrors!

regarding the taillight LED's... I must admit, I thought it was going to look ridiculous upon hearing the idea.... but after seing it, I actually like it!

Yeah i dont know if its a convenience package thing or not, my 2.5 is completely base and i dont have the wiring for it which i was pretty upset about, i know bina swapped out his mirrors on his sedan tho.. i dont know what their deal is....lol

That's pretty evil lookin'. Good job dude!I'm in agreement with RobPaulson though...I'd like to see them continue up the entire length of the taillight. If I keep my coupe, then I might have to try it!

Well if you look at the top towards the back of the taillight it starts to slant from a 90 degree angle to about 45 and gets MUCH more shallow. Though the idea did cross my mind I concluded to just cut them off where the trunk lid starts to turn level with the ground.

i still think that it would be nice to mount a red strand under the back of the car and hook it up with the brake lights.

kinda like those trucks that have the strip of leds between the tailgate and the bumper..... but on ours the leds wouldnt be visable.

it would just glow from underneath the butt when you press the brakes..

I agree, running the LEDs all the way up would look better, and would look more complete, finishing off the "prowling eyes" look, giving a better feel to the eyebrow affect the LEDs convey...but great work on creativity.

hahahaadid he finish like that, i like it much better under the taillight, he has underglow now...

it does look a little incomplete but i think if you ran the light all the way up it would look even more awkward.
