I appreciate all the information on this site and hopefully someone can help with this problem. I recently purchased a 97 HB 4x4 that I need to smog and the Brake Light and Battery light stays on, so it won't pass smog. I ran a search on this forum and it seems like a common problem, but I tried everything I've read and it's still on. Before I take it to a shop is there anything else I should check? Here's what I've tried

1. Checked Brake Fluids2. Checked 02 wired for short3. Checked ECU fuse (I believe it was 15A)4. Alternator Belt is tight5. Pulls grey plug from alternator and light stays on. No water, corrosion, etc in plug.6. Battery is only a year old and checks out good.7. Alternator is only a few months old. I haven't checked it, but I drove the car for a couple hours and it runs fine. I figured it would lose a charge after this long of a drive?

I also ran a scan with a OBD scanner, but it just said Pass and doesn't register the lights?

Any help you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated?

Thank you!

If the brake fluid is full, you can remove the instrument panel, and each one of those bulbs is just a little peanut bulb. Just unplug the ones that they don't want to see on, and they won't see them on. Do they actually take the panel out themselves to see if all the bulbs are working?

I thought about that and it will be my last resort, but I would like to figure out why it's on. It will also prevent it from warning me in the future.

Thanks!

Battery and brake light means the alt is not producing the correct amount. It could be just enough to keep the vehicle running but not enough which triggers the lights. Have the alt tested while under load.

LONGSHOT here have you replaced any bulbs for brakes? In my 90 Z I replaced 3rd brake light bulb and it fixed the bulb but dash light came on. The bulb had to be a specific ohm rating napa bulb was not. got one from nissan and it was fixed. The system knows a bulb was blown by change in resistance, and even a working bulb of the wrong resistance told the system it was blown. Hence light on the dash. May or may not be that way on your truck but it could be it is reading a unbalanced system and is lighting up to warn you of that.

That 's a strong possibility. The left rear lense is broken, so maybe one of the bulbs are out or corroded. I will check tonight. Thank you!

I am going to doubt it has anything to do with the rear brake lights. These trucks are too meat and potats to have 'lights out' warning systems like you find on more modern cars.

I'll let you know if it fixes it. I had a 1992 Toyota a few years back and when the tail light would go out the brake light would light up, so it's worth a shot.

Yeh but, check the FSM...no such provision was installed in these trucks. It's kind of hard to compare a Z to a D21. 1992 Camry's had it too but still...not a D21. Check the FSM if you doubt me.
