I have a 91 240 w/o rear steer. I turned my rotors and installed new pads less than 2 months ago. After the pad change, every time I back up it makes a grating noise. If I pull up a little on the e-brake handle it goes away, so I thought no big deal. When I got new ties last weekend, I noticed my rear brakes are almost gone. The man at the tire shop said it looked like they were getting hot from rubbing, but when in forward gears, they do not make a sound nor do they rub. What can cause this? Also, I have a lifetime warranty on my brakes at AutoZone, but am considering trading up (shelling out more money on swap) and getting ceramic brakes. What do you guys think of ceramic brakes? I need help fairly quick, because I only have this computer for today until 5. Thanks in advance.

waitamin,

your rear pads are worn out after only 2 months?

either you didn't lube up the caliper sliding pins

the caliper is seized itself

parking brake cable misadjusted

inspect the rotors: i don't think u can resurface them again <the min thickness that the machine shop can do is very small from new spec> i think they'll have a bluish tint to them from overheating, if the tire guy was right about your pads rubbing most of the time...

i'd say go slap on the free replacements & verify that both sliding caliper pins are cleaned/ relubed w/ high temp grease.

caliper pistons were easy to push back in, while rotating it clockwise? no rust around the piston? dust boot around piston in good condition?

brake hoses ok?

that's all i can think of...

Lubed caliper pins.Brakes work fine, so caliper can't be broke, right?Explain parking brake adjustment, see this is my first 240, so I am learning all the stuff as I work on it myself.Rotors can be turned again. My Brake/muffler shop only removes minimum metal for this reason. He is somewhat famous in this area for his work on our local drag cars. Only Flowmaster, Dynomax, and Magnaflow dealer in 60 miles.Caliper pistons make my head hurt. I have never seen a piston that you can not push in. I tries fo 15 minutes with a C-clamp to get that in. Finally gave up and called my uncle at Jones Nissan. He said I was a dumbass and to come get the right tool. Brake hoses look fine, but I may put on stainless braid when I change the pads. Have some for a Supra, will they fit?

mebbe u f something up when u were trying to push those things in...

i mean almost all the 4 wheel disc systems i've worked on <family's cars> have this turn-while-pushing-in type o' deal...

i know that you'll haveta turn it every 90 degrees, so those tabs on the pad lines up w/ the piston... w/out looking at the old pads themselves, that'll be hard to rule out that mebbe it was just not aligned...

those toyota hoses won't fit the 240sx's...

so u now know how to replace rear pads... i'd say goto autozone to get a free set. just use emery cloth/sandpaper to de-glaze the rotors & flush w/ soapy water/brakeclean.

i know that there's only a mm or 2 before the rear rotors have to be replaced.

the parking brake adjustment:6-8 clicks before it securely holds the car in place.

i think going in reverse then hitting the brakes would allow initial adjustment, but not sure on that <i know it works for drum brakes>

see how those 2nd set of autozone pads works for u in the next 2 months...

I did not notice this. When I put my new pads on, I will pay close attention to the tabs. This could be my problem, as the sound is only from one wheel. I talked to my uncle at the Nissan place today, and he said when I change the pads, loosen the parking brake cable 3-4 turns. He did not tell me where the adjustment is though.

The adjustment knob is actually a nut take off the e brake boot cover pull up on it and you'll see it, its on the side closes to your thigh if you sit in the driver seat. Then just get a ratchet, scoket and extension and loosen dont forget to tighten after.

I am not stupid, but I am away from my car now and will not have acess to this computer until Monday. Please describe how to get off the boot without breaking it, which way do i adjust? Make the cable more loose? I am not chancing anything.
