What type of brake fluid does the M56s take?

According to your owners manual, Maintenance and do-it-yourself SECTION: 8-15 (page 430), it uses DOT 3 fluid. You can overpay for the official Nissan stuff, or go to your favorite automotive discount supply store and by DOT 3 fluid from them.

In theory you can use anything that isn't DOT5 (which is silicone based). All of the previous ones are glycol based.

I myself have Motul RBF600 DOT4 at the ready for when I do my brakes.

I use Valvoline or Pennzoil DOT 4 synthetic brake fluids. Higher boiling point. Slightly more likely to suck up moisture, but I flush the lines every two years so it's a non-concern to me.

I'm using ATE TYP 200 DOT4. I used a lil over one Liter. Amazon sells them at $18.39 per Liter. After this one I will switch to Motul going back and foward
