has anyone used anyother type of fluid for brakes instead of brake fluid. its a hydrolic system so would auto trans fluid work? its hydrolic fluid? im a aircraft mechanic and we use a hydrolic fluid for those brakes, that is simaler to atf.

y im asking is that i now have to paint the under side of my car because the ABS pump was leaking and when the master cylder was replaced the fluid got on the paint there too. cause.... brake fluid eats paint like its a starving ethiopian.

im looking to use anoter type of fluid but am wonderin if anyone else has gone through this b4.

DOT 5 is silicone based, but I'm pretty sure you've got to flush out every bit of the old DOT3/4 fluid. I think they have a nasty reaction to each other.

Really, it's all about compressibility and boiling points. To that end, DOT 5.1 rules.

ATE Super Blue FTW!

I think your experience with fluids would probably serve better than the rest of us.

However, brake fluid is just hydraulic fluid, so I don't see why you couldn't use any other hydraulic fluid.

As long as the boiling point and the resistance to moisture is high enough then it'll work

automatic transmission fluid will trash all the seals in your car's brake system.

thanx...guys

monkey, u had the answer i was looking for. i wasnt sure bout the seals in the system. i know thats the prob with using the wrong type of fluid in a system, but i was hoping to find somthing that would work without replacing the seals.

now silicone based sounds to be rather friendly. dose anyone know if dot 5 is corrosive to paints?? cause if not then ill be going after that when i do my brakes.

5 will hurt paint just like the others.

But why would you have to worry about the paint again as long as you keep up checks on the car and make sure its operating well?

You could use a different base paint, I guess.

paranoia

i really dont have anyreason to be concerned. but its just the fact that in the first place... all motorcompanies use a fluid that is corrosive to paint. and a good paint job is the leading product to prevent rust. i find it kinda rediculus that its in there in the first place when there are other types of fluid that would still have the same working power, but dont deteriorate other parts of the car after they hit itits no question that problems happen..ie master cyldr goes bad, abs pump leaks, or even just a rotten line somewhere. after a while all that stuff can happen. it would prevent the rusting of the car if that chemical wasint in there in the first place, and somtihing else was..

the real fact, is that im jus pissed cause i have to paint some areas of my car because of this happening

thanx all for the help

I always use ATE Super Blue in my car. We use Motul RBF600 in our formula cars.

ATE is cheaper than RBF600, but has a slightly lower boiling point. The ATE fluid is also less available than RBF600.
