My HR31 coupe has an identical engine bay to the S13, and I used an early 80s Pulsar brake booster, they bolt straight in but have a small enough diameter to clear the head.

Mind you, our cars are RHD so the clearance may be different.

Thanks Mettler,

I dont think the clearences were that off, if I remember the Skyline I had in Okinawa, some 14 years ago, and they're pretty much the same but in reverse order.

Did it have any adverse affects to you braking power?

Do you have the overall diameter of the drum off hand?

Thanks,Matt

Hmmm you had to go and ask tough questions :p

I don't have it handy, but if memory serves me right, it was about 180mm diameter.

I haven't driven the car with this exact booster... I ran a mitsubishi colt brake booster prior to this. Same diameter, but physically shorter (and therefore less internal volume).

Braking wasn't perfect, a little softer than I would have liked (i.e. I couldn't get it to lock up), but I never actually configured the pushrod coming out of it to push to the same length as a factory big booster... but I have done so with this pulsar booster. Also, a friend with a GTS-t (I'm running the same brakes) had a ride in my car and I told him about the small booster, and he remarked that my car braked just as hard as his GTS-t.

Furthermore, I believe the added volume of this longer booster is going to improve braking slightly over the colt booster.

I think you'll be fine using a pulsar booster.

For U.S. reference, I run a geo metro booster on my car, but I had to modify it somewhat. Cant even remember what I did to it now. I believe late model Datsun 210 will fit stock, possibly also Datsun 510. On S14 you can mount the engine as low as possible and it will clear the stock booster if you have a 5speed booster, (autos are larger) Not sure if that will work on S13 also...

Also I read somewhere that some version of the Z31 booster might work.

Personally, I just went to a junkyard and looked in every engine bay until I found a small booster with the Japanese 4bolt pattern

Sean,

On the s14 the auto one is actually smaller than the 5 speed.

Auto booster is thicker but smaller in diameter

Manual booster is alot thinner but larger in diameter

I think its the same on the s13.

Ahh, I just remember on Finn's red car it was originally an auto and his turbo kit did not clear his brake booster, I guess it was a depth issue, not diameter.
