I thought that when doing a break upgrade, like the z32 calipers on an 240sx, that the rear brakes did not need to be upgraded since most of the braking force is in the front. Alsot most big brake kits are only for the front brakes. I found this very informative and technical artical about brake upgrades and the importants of keeping the braking distribution close to stock as possible for high speed braking <http://turnfast.com/tech_brakes/brakes.shtml>.

I have the 26mm z32 calipers on my s14 and notice that they lock up very easily. There have been times where I needed to brake quickly and my tires would lock up and I will just skid for a little while almost as if I were hydoplaning, but it does not feel like it is stopping any sooner. Besides the long screeching stops, they don't fade even whith the crappy pads that came with the calipers.

I think the cause of my car sliding so long before stopping is because my rear brakes are not being used as much so the net brakinf force of both the front and rear brakes together is actually less like the article talks about. I was thinking about puting upgraded pad in the rear to help balance this out.

Does anyone have any suggestion, comments, or similar experiences?

learn to modulate the brake pedal. when the wheels lock, lift slightly. how slightly you'll come to learn after while. use the rotors and pads to stop the car, not a flat spot on your tires.

or get abs.

or do a little research on the different brake MC sizes and how hey affect lockup. as there are different sizes available for you to choose, one should be what you want. i'd explain it, but i cant remember which way it goes.

I think just learning how to modulate my brakes better would be a good skill for me to learn. It's just in those hair moments, like when a car almost blind sides you on the road, that I don't really think about modulating the brake pedal so I don't lock them up. I quess with practice it should become more natural.

Also my s14 had abs, but when I put a z32 lsd the z32 pumpkin had different abs counters. So that through off my abs. My next project will be to swap the internals back into my s14 lsd pumpkin.

I have read a little about MC sizes, I will look into that again. Someone told me that I could buy a brake balance controller that alows you to adjust front and rear bias.

Thanks for the tips.

I did the front and rear swap but kept the stock master cylinder. I havn't really had any problem locking up the fronts at all. I'm not sure if this is because the rears help out that much more over the stock s14 rear brakes, or if i'm just a wuss on the pedal. But I have had to panic stop to avoid a few wrecks and havn't had a problem with lockup. my car doesnt have abs also

Bronze MFP you should check out this article when you have time http://turnfast.com/tech_brake...shtml\

It goes into depth about the significance of keeping the front and rear brake distribution close to the engineered stock distribution. The whole website is cool to learn about suspension and driving.

What tires are you running??? Remember TIRES stop your car not your brakes!

I think the rear Z32 are a good upgrade. I have them on my Q and its decent... Very balanced, throws your face foreward without locking things up...

I know tires stop your car and thats why I mentioned them at the bottom of my first post.

They do stop beautifully and I love the brakes, but I think at the limit braking the balance may be front biased which can actually decrease braking performance.

yes the bias is shifted to the front of the car with the z32 calipers.

if you leave the rear brakes stock, regardless of master cylinder changes, the front brakes will always lock up before the rears.

when using front z32 calipers only you trade brake bias for a lot more brake torque and fade resistance.

to stop the front brakes from locking up you just need to practice threshold braking, takes a while to get good at it, just have to learn how the car feels etc. (i suck at it)

btw hey, i met you at vans.
