shot peening involves shooting small pellets at the metal to work harden it. they create micro fractures in the surface of the metal that can stop a fracture from going all the way through the material. it's a common practice that dates all the way back to the early days of forging and metalurgy.
if you want to get all anal-retentive about the rocker arms, I would also go down the side with a grinding wheel and get rid of any flash you see down the side where the mold was when they poured the rocker arms. By grinding that flash flush with the surface of the rest of the material, you'll eliminate a stress riser. I would also double check to make sure all edges are rounded instead of sharp. That will reduce another stress riser that could potentially be an epicenter for cracking.
But the most important thing you can do to stop from breaking your rocker arms is don't over rev your motor. Just because you have a RAS does not mean that the rockers will not come off the HLAs and start floating. It's only a preventative measure that can help reduce the chance of valve float, not completely eliminate it. Thinking that your RAS makes your head bullet broof is like doing a dirty hooker thinking your condom will keep out the nasty STDs.
