Okay, currently I've got two jl audio 10W0's in my s14, they're in the truck boxes they came in (were used, my stepbro gave them to me)..anyway, i'm planning on building my own box(es) for them. My plans are to build a single L shaped box that rests on top of the gas tank and behind it, such that the subs face towards the rear of the car. My main question is how to mount said box. I figured 4 or so screws going horizontally into the trunk where the gas tank sits. I just wondered how much air space there was between the metal panels and the actual gas tank. Anyone know? Does anyone have a better suggestion for a box that will let me keep my trunk space and still be buildable? I've considered two boxes that fit beside the trunk hinges, but this area isnt symetrical and the boxes would be very strange shape. Would the L shaped box give me good enough sound quality? I know i need about 1 cubic foot air space per sub, should this be with the subs sharing the same airspace? Finally, I'm assuming I should use 3/4ths inch MDF. Is there anything stronger to use? Last time I used MDF it was a mess...The stuff chipped to easily and was all around weak.thanksast

drill first and smell for gas later... shape of the box won't affect SQ, just as long as you have proper airspace... you'd need 2 cubes of airspace for those 2 subs... 3/4" mdf is the best to use, cheap and very dense wood that absorbs lots of vibrations, just pre-drill all screws and the mdf shouldn't crack/split... good luck man!

oh and about that "drill first and smell for gas later" comment... don't do that :pface i have no idea where you could mount it down... you really only need a couple L brackets on the back of the box to hold it down enough, i think you'll have to use your best judgment as to where the gas tank is... it's prolly gonna be close to the fuel pump so don't drill near there :D

hehe, fire! Fire! L brackets to the base of the trunk might be good, actually...We'll see once i pull the carpet out again...Thanks for the advice

Oh yeah! How well does this stuff sand and paint up? I'm currently repainting some small areas of my dash navy blue and would like to match that with the boxes...I've got a bunch of fiberglass that i could layer over the box and sand, but i'd rather not...Or i can carpet it, which i'd rather not..thanksast

Yet one last thing to tack onto this thread. Will it hurt my sound quality to port the box? I'm not done with the box design so far, but it looks like i'll have more than the .90 cubic feet per sub, jl recomends a ported box to be from .9 to 1.5 cubic feet.
