Well the bug has bitten me again and I bought my 3rd parts Q tonight. It's a 91Q active, beige silk (?) exterior, tan interior. Seats are shot, don't ask. I'll pull it apart over the next few weeks and have the Infiniti salvage yard pay me to haul it off.

I looked at this car over a month ago when the owner wanted $700 and it wasn't running. Pulled the codes and there were none so that led me to the fuel system. I hooked the Tangalora ground wire to the fuel pump connection and it started right up. That changed his mind about selling it. I told him not to drive too long with the ground and that I would sell him a used FPCU and fuel pump very cheap. He never got back with me.

The owner calls me tonight, broken down on the side of the road with what sounds like a blown head gasket and probably destroyed engine, begging me to buy the car. He drove it into the ground with a leaky radiator in Sacramento heat and never replaced the FPCU. I got it for what I offered him the first time- $300. Under the hood I'm not interested in much except the bolt-on engine components and injectors, so a bad engine doesn't matter much. I sent my son (the unemployed recent college graduate, Cal ChemE) down to rescue him and the Q and call AAA to have it towed home.

It's too bad. If he had found NICO when he first bought the Q and spent a few dollars up front it could have been a nice car. He bragged about how he hadn't had to put a nickel into it (except for brakes) in two years. I'll be checking all the electrical components over the next few days and then start pulling it apart. I should have some nice parts for sale in about a month.

Sweet.

There's this guy across the street with a 93. His Q has been stting for about a year. I've been trying to get to him about selling his wheels. And maybe the rest of the car once I get some money. If I get the car cheap, I can definitely make back what I spent on it by parting it out right?

I've done this twice now so I can say that the first $500 comes back to you pretty quickly. MAF, speakers, ECU, TCU, corner lights, injectors, sunroof motor, front calipers, coils, visors, mirrors, seats, etc.). If you have a place to store parts there's another $400-$500 over the next few months and you'll have plenty of parts left over in case a member needs something. When I'm done the Infiniti salvage yard pays me to come tow it away. I'm fortunate to have a driveway to a shop under my house so the carcass is not an eyesore to the neighbors.

From the 2 Q's I've parted I've still got at least 10 bins of nice parts and I will probably be adding another 4 or 5 from this one. Try to not pay more than than $300-$400 for the car to make it somewhat worth your while. There's a lot of aches, pains, cuts and scratches associated with parting out a Q. Parts need to be cleaned and wrapped and they don't print postage, put themselves in the shipping container and drive to the post office without your help. Despite all this it's still a fun hobby and I'm looking forward to wrenching on this one for a while and being able to undercut the Infiniti stealership by about 95%.

Parting out a Q usually ends up being more of a pain than its worth UNLESS...

1. You have an adequate place to store and work on it.2. Adequate storage for removed parts.3. Ability to remove engine/trans/etc.

Hey goody, do you want to pull the ENTIRE active off for me???

Early actives may differ in more than just software from later actives. And can't be run with HICAS, unless you innovate.

I'd like an ECU plug and consult plug with as much of the harness as you can pull down before you cut it. About 12" or so would be plenty. Just don't cut it off right at the plug. I want to make a bench consult test jig, as long as the price if right....

Oh, and I'd like the ash tray mechanism or at least some of the latch parts. Mine won't stay shut and the clip that holds it is broken. Will that ash tray match the '94?

What kind of wheels does this thing have? Piepans?

If it has any aftermarket wheels, I'd like to be considered. Thanks.

goody scores again!!

Shane, the 94 console ash tray is different. in all likelihood, yours is easily repairable by replacing the roll pin on the left side. a 1/8 drill bit sawed to length works great (or maybe it was 3/32--but you get the idea).

She had a nice body, a perfect rear end, and some terrific headlights. There was nothing left for me to get out of her so I let her go today.

Get your minds out of the gutter. I'm talking about my parts car.

I had this Q exactly 21 days and stripped her down to the bare bones. I don't ship parts that are too bulky (doors/hoods) or heavy (trannys/rear ends) and am a bit phobic about laying on my back under the car. As a result, I didn't remove any of the exterior body panels or any of the transmission, rear end, or suspension components but the interior and engine compartment were fair game. Everything is cleaned, bagged and listed in a spreadsheet so I think I can find a part amongst the 17 bins of parts that I now have.

I had a bit of a tough time getting the salvage yard to pick this one up. Ron at Auto Gator in Roseville, CA has paid me to pick up the last two but this time said he had plenty of inventory and didn't want the car. My reputation may have preceeded me since the last two Q's he picked up from me didn't have much more than a chassis. After some hemming and hawing I agreed to give it to him if he'd send the tow truck.

It was a fun couple of weeks. On this one I did some self-training on plenum removal (without damaging anything) since I'll be doing mine soon for KS. I've got tons of parts but just have to take some time to list them in the classifieds.

You didn't happen to get the wheels off it right? Did it have piepans?

No it had generic wheels with plastic covers. Two different styles. I didn't save them.

You mentioned somewhere about some black plastic headlight covers or something. What are those? I might be interested.

I posted in your engine thread in the Infiniti General forum. Couldn't help but notice that Ozzie was missing both of the trim pieces inside the engine compartment that cover the headlight and turn signal assemblies.

You know people love a car when they start collecting corpses for organ donations. Rare on the Lexus forums.
