It may be that there is a separate partition for a back-up copy of the OS. Every computer I've bought has had this.

While I am not a fan of Acer, why would you be limited to their OS? As far as I can tell, most netbooks now use the intel Atom CPU and run Linux or a version of XP.
I actually have a netbook on order myself. Its a Samsung NC10 - Blue. Its slightly larger than the Acer, it boasts one of the biggest keyboards for a netbook and comes standard with a 6-cell battery (I've seen reviews indicate battery life of between 4-7 hours). Otherwise, its pretty much a standard netbook with built in wifi and bluetooth, the Intel Atom, Windows XP and a 10.2" screen. Its currently being sold on Costco.com for $400 (+ $19.99 shipping and any applicable tax).
My second choice was the HP 1035nr. Its also selling for about $400, but only has a 60 GB 4500RPM HDD (The Sammy's is 160 GB at 5400RPM) and a 3-cell battery which seems to clock under 3 hours of battery life based on playing video. The specs were otherwise pretty good and has a 6-cell battery available but was an extra $100 and it makes the unit a little thicker (negating any real size advantage it had over the Sammy). Couple that to Costco's fairly liberal 90 day return policy on computers and the fact that they will extend the manufacturer warranty to 2 years, I decided to try out the Sammy.
