I know that I am probably beating a dead horse, but does anyone know if I can replace the stock 10" Bose subwoofer with a 10" shallow depth free air aftermarket speaker (like Kicker or JL Audio) and still use the stock wiring? Will this improve the bass response and sound of the stock stereo system without any further modification? I know that it might not sound great, but I'm looking for a simple improvement. I have a 2004 M45. Thanks in advance.

As I understand it, it would do no good. The bose is set up to decrease the volume of the sub as you increase the volume of the system. I was going to do the exact same thing.

I am just going to fiberglass one kicker 10" L7 in the side of the trunk and grab signal from the rear speakers (which are full range as I understand it). If one isn't enough, I'll add another to the other side--I bought a big enough amp. :D

I'll post pics when I am finished having it all installed.

So I borrowed my brother's 10" subwoofer enclosed in a ported box and disconnected the bose sub and plugged it into the sub box to see what it would sound like. You could barely hear the bass. It made the bose subwoofer sound awesome in comparison. Needless to say, I don't think that there is much power going to the factory sub. I was doing a little research and found that the Soundgate LOCB.2 is specifically designed for Bose systems. I'm thinking that I use one of these and use the sub out channel coming from the bose amp and use an aftermarket mono amp to drive an aftermarket sub.
