Everything I've seen here about the CD changer is that you pretty much get rid of it if you upgrade the stereo because you won't get it to work with anything else. I know what you mean though; it was built to occupy that space and nothing else will fit as well as it does. If it's any consolation, the CD changers tend to grenade when they're this old, so it's likely only a matter of time before yours bites the dust anyway.
Spend a $100 on an iPod (or your phone or a thumb drive) and get a decent head unit, and you'll be so much happier! Being able to see things like the artist, track name, album, and sometimes even the album artwork is so much more satisfying than just the track number! If you wanted to take it a bit further, you can install an amp where the CD changer used to be.
