Bose question

Would I be able to hook an aftermarket deck up to the factory Bose amp? I did it on my GTX by hooking the remote wire into the pink bose wire. Can I do this with the Q or is it set up differant?

One more question, is this thing a piece of crap or is it any good? The price is cheap and I want this type of setup but can't afford the big dollar stuff.

The best way to hook an aftermarket HU up is using an adapter, It's gonna cost upwarsd for $50, maybe closer to $90, but that makes it completely plug and play. I'll do a quick search, but I'm sure there's some info listed in the Car Audio Forum here on NICO, stop by, we're a nice, but small group of regulars over there.

As for the HU, hmm I'ma gonna saya JUNK .

If you're looking for a replacement HU, what's your goal? MP3? DVD? touch Screen? GPS? Or just CD's?

Get a headunit with RCA pre-outs.. Fuse the pre-outs to the speaker inputs on the infiniti harness. Connect the amp-turn on wire from the headunit to the infiniti's amp-turn on wire.. What will happen is when you fire up the aftermarket headunit, it will turn on the bose amps and then send a line-out signal which the bose amps will amplify. The amps don't care if you have a bose headunit or not.. I have done this numerous times..lately on my own infiniti.. works beautiful and better than bose. No need for pie adapters and line-out converters..waste of money.. If you go to the infiniti groups on yahoo, my posting is there outlining how to do this..

Confused... you want to add another head unit to the Bose head unit? Or you want to connect the new head unit to the Bose amps attached to each speaker?

My goal for this is to have a flip screen with DVD player, TV tuner, AM/FM, Cd player. I want it to be in dash because Im not into the flip down out of the roof thing. I also do not want the screens in the head rests. I want it to be neat and clean looking. Sound quality only has to be as good as the Bose amp can support and I will also be adding a 12" JL in a sealed box for a little more punch. I already have the sub and amp.

As metaverse3 says, you can tie in directly, but even for the most adventerous DIY'er, working with electronics can be sometimes "beyond them".

I commend you if you go this route and (as described) it will work as it has for him in the past.

Meta - does anyone still even make non-RCA HU's? I guess some of the $99 and under maybe, but none of the "real" brands do, do they?

Cool, then circumventing the adapter would be your best route. The adapters are not "powered" so there's no gain or loss of signal strength attributed to using one.

BTW, meta - can you tell me what the trigger wire color for the pass rear amp in a Q is? A couple guys have wanted to set up an additional amp and it would be helpful to identify the trigger. Thanks.

So, let me get this straight. The Q has 4 seprate amps unlike the bose system in my GTX? I only have one amp for all the speakers in that one.

Each speaker has it's own amp piggy-backed on tot he speaker. The A-pillar tweeters (in the 94-96) are tied into the amp on the door speaker.

Well..there is still aiwa and some lower end kenwoods .which don't have rca's.. most headunits in the $200 range have them..bear in mind some of them bridge 2 channels into 4 speakers..rather than have 4 independent channels..like real rca-preouts...sound quality will suffer as a result..

AMP trigger wire on nissan/infiniti's are always blue..one wire...turns on all 4 relays that go to each speaker in the door and rear...blue/white is the antenna turn-on..which actually turns on an antenna activating relay.. nissan did not cut corners there. you can always mix/match.. both the blue and blue/white are low amperage wires that look for a relay triggering signal..200/300MA range.. If you are doing the bose bypass using my method..connect the blue wire from the headunit harness to the blue wire on the infiniti harness (you will probably use a metra conversion harness for the infiniti.. connect the blue/white wire or antenna turn on wire from the headunit to the infiniti's blue/white antenna turn-on wire.. when you fire up your aftermaket headunit..the relay triggering signal will go from the blue wire to turn on bose amps..line out feed goes out from pre-amp rca outs..and blue/white wire will turn on antenna for radio signal..

Not all aftermarket headunits come with seperate blue and blue white wires...most will come with just a remote turn on blue/white wire.. they assume you will turn on an antenna or amp..not both. I ran into the same situation with my pioneer GPS headunit... I ran the blue/white trigger wire to 2 relays which each operated the antenna and the bose amps respectively..works great..

I personally recommend going down this route. If anybody is in the quad-state NJ/PA/DE/MD area.. I'd be more than glad to help out in person, or you can see my setup in action and judge for yourself
