Well, the line level is the output from the radio, and it's matched with the input to each speaker with it's separate amplifier. Just to make it simple say the volume output (line level output) is measured between 1-10 and the radio and speaker amps are both designed to work with a line level of 4. If you put a different radio with a line level output of 7, you'll overdrive the amplifiers and get distortion and clipping when you turn the radio up. If you put in a radio with a line out of 2 then you have to turn the radio up a lot just to hear the music, and you amplify a lot of noise, so you're more likely to hear a hissing noise, etc.
Bose changed the line level output and input on the radios between the 90 an 91 Q - I discovered this when I bought a used set of 91 amps and hooked them up to the 90 radio. Drove me crazy so I ended up buying the 91 radio a few months later. I'm not sure if the radio in the pic. (looks like a J30 or I30/Maximna unit from the Mid 90s?) would be the same line level or not... If you can get the radio cheap, it's worth a try!
