Hey everyone, I was reading an article in one of the many car magz, (I cant find that article, but I think it was a Skyline don't remeber for sure) in which the engine had been bored out from 2.6 to 2.8. Now my ? would be, is it a good idea to get the sr20det engine bored to larger dimensions?

Jun and Toda both make stroker kits for the SR20DET, bringing the displacement to just below 2200cc's. This isn't really the answer to your question though I know, sorry.

do you know what 'bore' means? and the effects of having different bore?

or

bore and stroke?and the effects they have on a motor?

check out the motor section, it teaches a lot of good info.

OK, so I guess what I am asking is if I increase the displacement of the engine, would that be a good idea or not. What kinda effects it would have for the engine, positive and if any negative.

a slight overbore is good, but it won't provide a huge gain. It will probably be 10-15 horsepower for a .5mm overbore, which is what most people do when they upgrade to forged pistons. Unfortunately, you can't do a huge overbore because the cylinder walls are already pretty thin.

Thinner cylinder walls mean a thinner selvee,...creating a weak point for the block IMO.-James

Using one of the stroker kits is something that could be done, but it's for someone who has done a lot of other modifications. To see good gains you would need a good sized to big sized turbo. Something to do when you win the lotto.:D

here ...there are many others, just do a search. Use the words Jun stroker kits, or Toda stroker kits. Pretty self explanatory.

Hi ya'll, just browsing the board and saw this post....

Here's the deal with boring an SR; It's not easy

The SR20's have nikasil linings/sleeves that are only about .01 thick. FSM says service limit on these sleeves is .008 over and after that has to be recoated or sleeved. I've been toiling for months over what to do about forged pistons because you can just get 1mm over pistons, bore it, and drive away. Well, you CAN, but, it's not going to last. So, you have 3 choices.

1. Hone the block (must use a DIAMOND BIT on nikasil) and have custom pistons made for the new bore.

2. Bore the block and have the cylinders replated with nikasil, then have pistons made, so you can go 1 or 2 mm overbore

3. Put in ductile iron sleeves. Then make pistons and/or bore to your hearts content.

I'm doing option 1 because A) it's the cheapest and B) nikasil is far superior to iron cylinder walls. Nikasil is harder, more durable, and has less friction than iron cylinder walls do. This seems to be a gray area on this board, it's taken me a long time to figure out how to make pistons for my motor, and not many people realize that the SR has a nikasil coating. I hope this helps you guys.

problem is its a fat wad of cash, and unless ur making a race car or have an endless cash flow then the money would be best spent in other areas.

You should probably only bore out your engine if you plan to spend A LOT of money on your car and you just wanna sqeeze out all the horses you can get. Otherwise just spend the money on things that will get you more horses for less money, and wont have a chance of compromising the reliability of the engine.
