My step-dad says that you have to have the engine cleaned and bored before you can order pistons because you order the pistons to fit whatever the shop bores it out to.

This doesn't sounds right...can't you tell a shop how much you want it bored? I will be rebuilding this summer..will be using forged pistons... do I have to buy them after the engine is bored or what.

your step-dad is wrong.

it is always best to order your pistons first and then have the block bored. different manufacturers require different clearances for their pistons. piston material also determines the amount of clearance needed. most importantly, even though you may order a set of pistons to your specs, all the pistons will NOT be exactly the same. each cylinder will be bored to a specific piston.

we tried this at my shop once. we knew better, but tried to save time by having the block overbored before we got the pistons. we never could get the engine to break in.
