Borderlands is a lot of fun, but I think Gearbox has a lot to learn about balance and spawning. I'm getting sick of the game repeatedly spawning enemies on me to create a challenge. One of the most basic rules of difficulty balance is that fewer smart enemies is preferable to more stupid ones.
But my BIG nitpick is incessant respawns after I've cleared an area out. You don't even get to zone out of an area before the enemies come back. Walk to one end, clearing out everyone on the way, and if you want to walk back you'll suddenly be facing respawns of the guys you already killed! It's really, really irritating.
The game has no PACING. It's all combat ALL THE TIME. Walk past this canyon, some guys come out after you. EVERY TIME. Walk past that shack, guys come out. EVERY TIME. You NEVER get a breather. Never get a chance to appreciate the scenery or the massive bad-guy cleanup you've done. Because the badguys just come back. It really hampers the feel of the world and also impairs the feeling of progress through the game. It just ends up feeling like one big long fight with some loading screens in the middle. I'm sick of fighting my way in AND OUT of every area. I'm sick of fighting the same monsters at the same spot every time I look that direction.
The game needs some improvements in AI, pacing, spawning, and balance. It starts to get frustrating and tedious: two things you NEVER want to happen in a game you're playing for fun.
Basically, after about half an hour of $50 Borderlands, I start thinking "I could be playing Torchlight instead." Which is a $20 game that has pacing, spawing, and balance down pat.
