where should I look to boost the strength of the bottom end and valve train besides the nissan catalog

For what power level?

Stock block does ~350rwhp easily.

Add forged pistons, and you're good for +450rwhp.

Pistons and rods have done ~638rwhp...but can do more.

Valve train is overbuilt for the low revs of a KA, and you can't really make it rev higher without destroking...so you're set there. Check out some of the new Crower cams...some require new springs/retainers, most don't.
