1992 240sx, 180,ooo kms on engine. planning on slapping on a turbo kit with a stand a lone ECU and upgraded fuel system. what would be a SAFE MAXIMUM amount of boost to run with out having to worry about blowing up or lifting anything?

I'd run 8psi. Unless you put in new bearings and rings....15-16 psi.

^ But it'll also will depend on your turbo... Every turbo moves different amount of air every PSI.

True but 8psi is not that much.....either is 16.....8psi on a motor with miles on it. Stock motor has proven 28 psi with fresh rings and bearings, race gas, and tuned of coarse.

Yea I know that. I think it was nissanfanatic, or somthing like that, that did 28psi and made over 500whp on a stock block. But I was just putting it out there, just to keep it in mind. Since his car has lots of miles on it. :)

At what point would the transmission need to be beefed up to handle the power? Any suggestions for a transmission that will be very very strong. Eventually will need to hold around 600hp.

Please excuse my ignorance in advance. I know what piston rings are. I assume that's what you're replacing. I Googled "engine bearings" and it looks like there are different types of bearings. Which bearings do you replace when you boost an engine? Or do you replace all of them? Main, Cam, and Rod (more?) How about bearing spacers? Thanks.

Yeah, you would replace all of them. Acl. Or clevite bearings are pretty good. I run acl bearings on 25psi and haven't had a problem ...3years running . I would replace main rod and thrust bearings. There aren't any cam bearings in these motors. Z32 trans for drag and z33 trans for drift.....both will hold plenty of power but the z33 trans I've heard has issues. Both transmissions have adapter kits for like $750.

Compact,
Thanks for the great info. What's the difference between the Z32 and Z33 that makes one better for drag and the other better for drift? What kind of issues have you heard about for the Z33? Thanks.

The z33 trans has closer gear ratio which a lot of drifters like, the only things I've heard about them is the 2-3rd synchro has issues ...especially on the early models.the. z32 trans is built alot stronger and has very close gear ratio to our stock transmissions and has a wider ratio so if you have alot of power can help keep you in boost longer.
