well i went to tune my car today. t3/t4 stock internals..370cc safc2 msd btm...

i set my btm to 1degree per psi to keep it safe. i had it -10% across the board for HI throttle which is on the safe rich side i would say.

so there i tell my brother to go into boost (im in 2nd gear) and im holding the safcII. it was holding 8psi at 3500rpm with good AFR's...then when it hit 4200rpm it shot up to almost 20psi and i immediatley told my brother to let off the gas. there was lots and lots of backfiring sounds but i remember anthony (structure) told me that that sound would happen if i had to much retard and 1degree for every psi with 20psi is ALOT of retard.

anyways i heard lots of ticking noises on the way back home. my car felt a little weaker but i took it lightly 3 mins home. i did a compression test and it was 150, 150, 100, 130. i had no white smoke coming out the exhaust so its not a blown HG? but the 3rd and 4th internals dont look so good. is this ticking sound something blown?

Craving-My guess would be ring lands gone in #3, maybe #4 cylinders. Fairly common in the stock engines under boost. I hope not, but those compression numbers are looking familiar to what we see here.

Good luck, we will cross our fingers for you.

most likely you blew the ring lands on those cylinders OR you have a small crack in the head gasket. i blew blue smoke when i blew cylinder 3 ring land.

sunny - my idle isnt jumpy, its the same as it was before. the engine isnt that shakey either, its just that ticking noises is pissing me off lol...

however when im braking to a stop sign sometimes my engine would die out, but i can just turn it right back up.

what do people suggest? i go to college 9 hours away in 1 month. i was planning to take this car. either i buy another block for about...200$? swap it in and try it again. or go to school and save up for a rebuilt motor and come back and do it again. or just sell everything and hope to one day come back. but no, im not going SR

i take back that selling everything, hell no i wont lol..

but as much as i want to spend the 200$ and go at it again, i would really like a rebuilt block, but school and my budget wont allow me right now

unforcantly it sounds like blown ring lands , But if all your budget allows for is a stock bottom end and you have the time I would say dig in, if there is no damage to the block (or that can be boared off) you then have a spare to start building when you get the funds going on. That compression seems a way low on the #3 cylinder, and lower then it should be on the #4 cylinder so it could still be a head gasket crack gut I'm going with ring lands........ best of luck either way it turns out.Peace,Pat

don't you have to pour a bit of oil inside the piston so that you can check if it really is the ringlands or something else?, check the oil and the coolant.......also you could try a leakdown test.

yeah my guess is that its the ringlands because i have no white smoke AT ALL coming out the exhaust. also i just tried to start the car again, and it would take some time to get it on. is it difficult to slap on another stock block/bottom end? i have a dad that used to be a mechanic. is it just time consuming? and is it stupid to just slap on another stock one. my motor seemed fine until i started boost spiking

Well your gonna have to pull the motor I suppose, witch would be time consuming (and your gonna need a hoist and all that and some way to support the engine well your switching the bottom end out at least so you don't crush the oil pan). Well your doing that you might want to think about new motor mounts since your gonna be in there anyways but then again that is something that you could do when you put in the built engine too (not to mention the budget factor IDK if you got the cash for em right now either). I don't think that it is stupid to just buy a stock bottom end because like you said it was holding fine until you had the spike so just make sure you get one that is in good condition and don't start to push anything harder, well you were on the conservative side so I guess you could push a bit more but that is your call. Best of luck Peace, Pat

Geo - i thought it was the brake booster line's vacuum signal wasnt sensitive enough for the wastegate so i went ahead and switched over to the FPR line. it still boost spiked. im guessing the wastegate is ****ed up or something...

ah crap my dads home ima get an *** whooping

yeah I forgot to ask what you though caused the boost spike, get that sorted out b4 you start pounding on your new bottom end yano so you don't do all that work for nothing to just have it spike again.Peace,Pat

my dad thinks it has something to do with the valves and thats why its making that ticking noise?? im not burning oil OR cooland but i just get a ticking noise and low compression. maybe the messed up valve in the 3rd cyl. is causin the low compresion?

the compression isnt low enough to see smoke yet at idle, it would be blue anyway. if you were to get into boost i garuntee you would see smoke billowing out of the exhuast, just as i did when i blew my stock motor. lucky for me my built motor was sitting in my garage.

figure out whats up with that wastegate and throw a stock motor in there. better to blow $200 motors than $2000 motors. first fix the problem.

Don't blow it up.Chance are you'll blow the block not to mention you'll be stranded.O yea don't forget DAMAGE to you turbo parts. Beside you got a good block to build some internals on.

Pour some oil into 3 and 4 see if the compression increases, if it does, you found the problem.

The ticking could be a loose piece of the piston bouncing around inside the combustion chamber, no joke, happened to a guy I know.

i call ring lands also, i had a car that over boosted and heated the lands too much and they curled up and in , and that thousand that it raised it made it tap the head.

so i say pull the head.

If your going to change out the motor, is there anyway that i can get your head from you, just today i bent all my intake valves, i know its sucks, it wasnt realy me, but my mechanic, that was trying to do the timing on my car, instead of just changing out the valves, iam trying to look for a head, please if you email, thanks a lot

if you can wait until winter break, then we can work it out. but sorry for your engine and you should really try to make that mechanic pay. unless he was a friend mechanic
