Some of you may remember me asking a bunch of questions about putting a Z31 turbo into my RB20DET S13. Well it is done and it takes a decent amount of cutomizing. In retro-spect I would just have stuck with my T3/To4e but hey hindsight is 20/20. Anyways I finally got it on the car and the used turbo I purchased is junk, it doesn't make over 2psi. So I get to try and get my money back from the company i bought it from, it has a suppossed 30day warranty. Anyways just thought I would vent. But as for making this post useful;

-The water lines bolted up with a little tugging into place. -I had to run a custom oil line into the turbo and then used the RB oil drain tube, which bolteed on no problem. -As for the exhaust I had to make a custom O2 pipe, I just cut the 7-bolt flange off the Z O2 pipe and bought a 180 degree mandrel bent tube from the local hot-rod shop, along with a 18mm O2 bung and a 3-bolt flange. The rest was just cutting everything up, lining it up, and welding it together.-Then came the compressor outlet pipe. The RB one uses 3-bolts to hold it to the housing, the Z turbo is round and accepts a coupler. Due to lack of time and resources I just used my bench grinder and ground the rb outlet to a circle and then bought a 2" plumbling coupler with the metal surround as a temperary fix.

Either way it is all on and I tested the car for boost leaks (none) and then inspected the wastegate actuator (OK from what I can tell) so since the turbo is making a circular saw type noise and no boost, I am gonna say i need a new turbo.

Thanx for listening.

I wired the waste gate flapper shut and still made no boost.

got any pics?

There was another guy on here a while back that had a 25 in his Z31 if I remember correctly.

I think it is cool to see people putting the RB's in cars other than the S13/S14. Just cool to be different sometimes.

I think you misread my post, I have an RB20DET in my 89' S13 hatch. This whole thread was just about me putting a Z31 turbo on it.

you would think an RB in a Z31 would be easier to work on than a VG but you would be wrong like Elton John endorsing hustler, IT SUX! but as the poster said he has a 240 so back on topic we go. The VG30 turbo is a decent upgrade if you can find one with some boost left in it.

My friend drives a Z31, and I cant say Im all that impressed with its turbo. Is it really an upgrade to the RB25's stock turbo?

i would say so just to the fact that my rb25 turbo couldnt take much abuse over 12-14psi.

not to sure if there are other reasons too.

*stupid ceramic exhaust wheels*

Yeah I don't think the Z turbo is that much more capable than a Rb turbo, but in theory the steel wheel will be more reliable. I already have two Rb turbos with snapped ceramic shafts. Don't need any more. Unless Krayton wants to give me a loaner.
