If you're a frequent visitor to autoblog, you'll have seen this article on this technology... It's called Bongiovi Acoustics, and it claims to make car audio sound fantastically better.

I haven't read or found precisely how it works, but I'm interested to hear what our forum audio heads have to say about it. As far as I'm concerned, it just sounds possibly like an equalizer for different speakers, and compression + amplitude increase overall to bring out the quieter sounds.(Wiki on Compression/)

I'd like to hear what this sounds like in real life, especially the Virtual Subwoofer...

Thoughts! I wanna know if this is a gimmick or not...

Just a gimmick.

Sound is a physical property. You're limited by the ability of the speakers to reproduce it accurately. An EQ will help make up for the fact that a car is not an ideal location for a stereo. But it cannot make a speaker play frequencies it is incapable of playing. A good EQ can help a lot. The stock stereo does not let you control the EQ, just bass/treble boost which wont do much to amplify or cut certain frequencies.

This system would be better than the stock system if all else was equal. The demo video just shows the volume increasing. Not sure what that is supposed to tell me. I can turn the volume up in my car too.

The stock bose system has some EQ tuning. But it is still lacking a flat frequency response curve because the speakers are less than ideal. The best bet for good quality sound is using good quality speakers. It's really as easy as that. Cars that use this system would probably utilize lesser quality speakers and try to use this to make up for it. The manufacturer could probably save costs by using cheaper speakers and this unit. This guy is in it for the money. At $10 per car, that adds up quickly. Consider GM is still building roughly 9-11 million cars this year alone (and the auto industry is obviously down). You do the math...
