I recently got a new S14 with a few rust holes.

My questions is, should I be using something like Bondo's metal filler or a fiberglass compound?

Could someone tell me when Fiberglass is the better choice over the Metal Filler?

Thanks in advance

I don't have a welder and I can't afford to go to a shop

All the rust is in aesthetic location- nothing structural.

unless you cut all the rust out though it'll just keep rusting under the bondo job until it does rust something important. just spray it with a rust inhibitor until you can get it properly fixed.

Look up rusted hatch repair DIY. I used the same technique shaving my antennae. Came out ok, still not finished though...

Do you guys know of a place that sells different 240sx body panels?

If I can can find the sills for sale, it would save some time.

Thanks

Just look around locally in your area or talk to friends and see what friends they have. Most people are willing to lend a helping hand to make some easy cash. It sucks you have the rust, but at the same time putting a bandaid on it will only make it look decently temporarily. Another easy thing to do is try to get a cutout of the piece you need from a donor car and then you don't have hardly any metal work to do. Just cut, fit, and weld. Good luck. Also when will we get to see pictures of this new purchase??

I work in a body shop, and I would sugest to sand blast the area thats rusty than use a primer/sealer and use some fiberglass to patch it up. Than you can bondo that and prime and paint.

Yikes. I would be scared as to rust hiding anywhere else. Those are in some nasty spots.

That thing is garbage. Not even worth repairing. I'm just wondering what the frame rails look like... oh yeah, let me guess you have a sun roof don't you?

"If I get the car paint, is the Bondo filler screw me over?"I guess If you english text book is holding up your car its kinda hard to learn how to talk huh. If you just bondo that, its gonna rust out next to it. Either cut, grind and weld, or patch and solder that. Even then its just gonna be a matter of time before it catches cancer again. Good luck bro

Looks like you got into more than you expected. Wasn't going to say this but I GUESS i'll post something useful even though you wont take my advice and just go with the cheapest alternative ftl.

WELD SHEET METAL TO THOSE AREAS! Grind them and make it flush, then enjoy your awesomeness. Filling that all up with bondo is fail

PS go read some of those books NOW!

I do have a sun roof and it works- NO RUST.

Frame rails are 99% rust free too.

If I get the car PAINTED, will this much Bondo Body Filler ruin the paint job?

I promise never to post again while I'm sleeping.

Any suggestion on where I can find these rocker panels?

I LOL at alot of this post. Why the f*** would body filler effect your paint? You know AUTOMOTIVE BODY SHOPS use filler right? You need to cut rocker panels off of another 240SX and weld them on.

Body filler (bondo) is polyester resin with a filler in it and is VERY brittle. Polyester resin is also the most common resin for fiberglass work. It is all right for auto body paint shops to use filler because it is only used for SMALL things like scratches or small dings. People who use it for anything larger will inevitably get blisters and cracks in their paint because the metal and filler don't move and expand at the same rate. Plus, any real auto body shop uses "evercoat rage" which is a more light weight and reliable filler.I am very knowledgeable on composites (fiberglass, carbon, resins, etc...) Hince the name "FIBRE GUY" Fibre is another way to say fiber. The only PROPER ways to repair heavily rusted metal is to cut it out and weld a new piece in OR to completely replace it. If i were you I would either weld new pieces in or start looking for a shell. If you get a new shell I call dibs on your 5 lug hubs!

Glad to know someone who knows about fibers (fibres).

I do plan on cutting it out and welding new pieces.

You get dibs if you can tell me about the expected quality of QMI rocker panels of if you can find me another source

The drain lines from the sunroof can cause rust along the bottom of the doors.

^No need to bash someone you don't know.

Taking a closer look at those pictures (the one with the wheel hub) even the subframe and under chassis is rusting. That much rust is an issue. I would actually worry about the more structural stuff than the cosmetic bs. Get a grinder, some wire wheels, and some flap discs to completly clean all of the rust of and then paint on some underbody liner or truck liner. I would do that if you want to save it before it really gets bad.
