The bluetooth in my car went out several months ago. My wife was driving it full time and never used it, so I only recently got around to fixing it. My problem was different, but I expect the fix would be the same. In my car, I had no volume come through the speakers from the hands free system. My phone would connect just fine, but when dialing a number or receiving a call the speakers would pop one time followed by complete silence. The navigation and stereo worked just fine.
I could not find anyone else having a similar problem, so took a chance and bought a used DVD Navigation unit (which includes the bluetooth module). My bluetooth works again, so the problem was with the bluetooth module in the Navigation unit. I have no idea if that individual module can be replaced... replacing the entire Navigation unit was relatively easy. The part cost $175 on ebay, and I seem to have gotten a decent deal. From my search, a clean used unit with a warranty usually runs around $250. I made an offer to a listing from a salvage yard and they accepted.
If you proceed, you will lose all of your navigation settings (saved addresses), your phonebooks, linked phones, and maintenance schedule data. You may want to glance at your maintenance schedule before pulling the unit if you use the car as your only source of tracking. There is no security code built into the unit, so you will not have to worry with unlocking the unit with a security PIN after installing. After I installed, I had the maintenance schedule, linked phones, and contacts from the donor car. That was easy enough to clear out and set back up.
