well today i went from castrol gtx 10w-30 to mobil 1 10w-30 fully synthetic oil. After all was done and ready to drive it seemed to be spitting a lot of MOSTLY white but some blue smoke, hardly any really. After a little drive it started to smoke a lot (half blue/white i would say) and it felt really sick from smelling it. While letting it cool down it was a lot better less smoke and less blue but still a tad left. Just wanted to know if i should be concerned or if i should drive it a bit.

PS s13/rb20

once again thanks guys

you should never switch a motor that has been run on dino oil directly over to syn, does terrible things as you've found out.you are supposed to do it gradualy say at each oil change subsitute one qt of oil for another ie 4 qts, so one is syn others are dino, 2nd change 2 syn 2 dino, ect....

synthetic oil is a much smaller molecule(why it protects better is it gets in smaller places for more coverage). by switching over to it you're seeing oil leakage that you cannot get with organic oils. switch back and you shouldn't have a problem.

personaly on any motor thats been run on dino i wouldnt convert to full syn, perhaps a semi syn blend but yeah full can be a bit touchy on older motors, some will take it others wont.

it should solve the problem... unless something else happened we don't know about like your head gasket decided to go at that time, but it should solve your problem (or reduce it a lot)

dino oil is cheap. make sure that isn't the problem, since your filter is new you shouldn't even need to change it, if you even want to you could drain it to get the synth out of it

your turbo might be the cause of the smoke.

well i did just make an exhaust manifold gasket with some special stuff jgy suggested. But im assuming its the oil cause the gasket came out nice. I checked my turbo and it spins nicely with no shaft play and all gaskets are nice and new.

Usually white smoke is water/antifreeze.Blue is oil.Black is too rich.

Check your coolant levels.
