What's interesting is that back in the day with the old BMWs, it even stated in the owners manual that it was not unusual to burn a quart in 3000-5000 miles, and no one really seemed to think that those were problematic... I really don't think the oil consumption issue is as big of a deal, it's pretty simple to just add oil every now and then and move on with life. Yeah, it's not ideal, but it's a pretty small price to pay.
I don't think the lexus/toyota stuff is really that much better than anything else out there... I think in the mid 90s they made some pretty solid stuff and that reputation is carrying on through today, even though now I think they're average or slightly above average. Honestly I think that people that have Lexus's just take better care of their cars, for whatever reason, which is what gives them the perception of being better. How about power steering pumps that fail and spew fluid all over the alternator, destroying both? How about starters under the intake manifold? How about timing belts every 100k miles (that cost the same amount to replace as the chain guides on the 1st gen). How about on the 6cyl (GS300) the mess you can get with the front oil seals going out?
Struts, rubber hoses, and valve cover gaskets are things that will wear on any car. You're also comparing various issues over various generations. By and large the 3rd gen Q has proven to be pretty reliable, and overall a good value. You're going to spend a heck of a lot more on an LS or GS, and maintenance costs will be similar.
