I started the Q this afternoon 24 hours after parking it yesterday and quite a bit of blue smoke pored out the tail pipe. I have never seen it do this before..ever.. I did substitute Lucas Oil full synthetic oil stabilizer for the quart it was low. It says it's equivalent to 5/30 which is called for... Anyways, what gives with the oil burning smoke on start and what's it an indication of??

Something does not jive here......you just posted above that you substituted the Lucas product FOR THE QUART{of oil}IT WAS LOW, and it is blowing blue smoke{burning oil}. Just a week ago,you started a thread saying your Q does not burn a single drop of oil.Explain how it could be blowing blue smoke and a quart low yet uses not a drop of oil" Here is the thread you started just last week stating you do not use a drop of oil?05-q-zero-oil-consumption-t611509.html

Well inspector, if you noticed the subject line, it states "all of the sudden" until that point it had not previously. Duhhhh.. I've only put 4,100 miles on the car. Keep up the great work-

I plan on trading it in.. if someone here on the Q club site wants to see it then sure they can come check it out themselves. There's nothing wrong with the car. Hell I just paid for a full inspection. Your right I do want it sold, you know why? Because these cars are the biggest pieces of shi* I've ever owned. Junked stretched Altima. Nissan can't hold a candle to Toyota. Everyone on here is crying about knock sensors, struts, hoses under the plenum, valve cover gaskets, starters at 100,000 miles! Go read the Lexus or Avalon even, club. No one is discussing that BS. I can't wait to get away from this car. Keep telling yourself it's world class perfection. I'm beginning to see a semblance to intelligence and loving these Japanese Buicks. Did Nissan run out of money during the engineering phase?? Road noise, vibrations, rough motors that make new noises every week, thin paint, oil consumption.. jeezuz. I knew I shouldn't have given Infiniti a chance, it doesn't even feel close to Lexus or Jaguar or MB. It's more like an Impala.. I've seen you get into it with people on here Qship, go float.

Lol, I believe I mentioned in one of your other threads that these engines mostly burn oil. Just check and top off often. Past discussions seem to agree that our high performing engines come with some downfalls - and we appease the gods of horsepower & torque by sacrificing some quarts.

My recommendations? Just stick to using oil. There's always another grade of oil out there if you need something thicker. I run 10w-40 in all my vehicles except one that specifically asks for 5w-30. Not sure if the goop you put in had any part of it, but if it caused some piston rings to get sticky, then you could get a good amount of blowby, resulting in the blue smoke.

All engines burn some oil. All high compression engines burn oil. VK45DEs will burn oil, it's just a matter of catching it in good time.

What's interesting is that back in the day with the old BMWs, it even stated in the owners manual that it was not unusual to burn a quart in 3000-5000 miles, and no one really seemed to think that those were problematic... I really don't think the oil consumption issue is as big of a deal, it's pretty simple to just add oil every now and then and move on with life. Yeah, it's not ideal, but it's a pretty small price to pay.

I don't think the lexus/toyota stuff is really that much better than anything else out there... I think in the mid 90s they made some pretty solid stuff and that reputation is carrying on through today, even though now I think they're average or slightly above average. Honestly I think that people that have Lexus's just take better care of their cars, for whatever reason, which is what gives them the perception of being better. How about power steering pumps that fail and spew fluid all over the alternator, destroying both? How about starters under the intake manifold? How about timing belts every 100k miles (that cost the same amount to replace as the chain guides on the 1st gen). How about on the 6cyl (GS300) the mess you can get with the front oil seals going out?

Struts, rubber hoses, and valve cover gaskets are things that will wear on any car. You're also comparing various issues over various generations. By and large the 3rd gen Q has proven to be pretty reliable, and overall a good value. You're going to spend a heck of a lot more on an LS or GS, and maintenance costs will be similar.

FWIW, my Y33 does it if the oil level is above the "FULL" mark - particularly if it was run hard just before being shut down the previous day.
