Blue smoke coming from my 2008 Maxima

My 2008 Maxima spits out blue smoke when it's cranked. It is a tiny bit slow cranking, and it cut off on me one day when I was driving it, but it hasn't done it again. Two mechanics (one at the dealership) told me I need a new engine, but I'd rather try something else first. It runs fine - no unusual noises at all. I've read in some other places that it could be valve stem seals. Anyone have any expertise to share with me?

I would do a compression check on the engine before I went to another repair shop for this problem
