After sitting for a few days I started my 2005 Q45 and a big puff of blue smoke came out the exhaust and there was a ticking sound from the engine that lasted about 10 seconds, similar to the sound a cold engine with low oil makes on startup, only this lasted longer. My oil is clean and the level is fine. Has only done it the one time.
Any ideas?
Stuck lifter maybe??

Mine makes a little smoke upon cold startup, if the engine was run hard shortly before it was shut down.

My theory is that high RPMs leaves extra oil up in the heads, some of which leaks past the valve seals into the combustion chambers after the engine is shut off.

You're smart to check the oil level - Overfilling the crankcase seems to aggravate the problem.

Thanks Ski. Any ideas on the ticking noise?

Sounds like a leaky hydraulic lifter to me.

You might try an Auto-Rx treatment but if that doesn't work the only thing you can do is identify the offending lifter and replace it.

I have the same ticking if my Q sits for more than about 5 days... I think the timing chain tensioners bleed down and cause it. I can sometimes make it better, or eliminate the noise, by pulling the injector fuse, and turning the starter over for a few seconds before starting. That gets everything oiled up. Blue smoke is probably rings or valves... it happened on my old Q when the mileage was getting higher.

The problem has not happened again in the last few weeks. Hopefully it was a one-off event.
