I drove the car a few blocks and i saw that the battery light was on. i was late for class so i just said **** it and turned around to replace my alternator. It was only showing 11 volts and 11 at idle.replaced it. this is on a 92 S13, with S13 harness. however the motor is an S14 and i was using an S14 alternator. it worked fine, as it obviously should. However, i was replacing it with one of my s13 alternators.

replaced it, and when i went to fire it up, i cranked it and it just made a nasty noise. and when i went to crank it again and nothing, no starter click, no guages, no stereo, but the interior lights still work.

it blows the fusible link in the passenger side fuse box in the engine bay, the IGNITION SW 30 amp. reading the fsm shows that this only goes from the battery to the ignition. i have no idea where i could have developed a short, any ideas?

Sorry, i posted this in the KA section, then i remembered that we're all morons.

S13 alternators don't work on the S14 engine from what I've heard. Maybe its a combination of a problem with the battery and the alternator. Or maybe the alternator wasn't the problem to begin with. I had a problem like this with my 2005 Durango. I was a problem with the battery connection to the ignition.

hmmm, well S14 alternators definately do work in S13s as i ran this for a few months...

its possible all i had was a loose connection ot the battery....

but the point is, after the install, when the ignition is turned to anything, even accessory, it burns out the IGNITION SW fuse

Oh, so it's not just that it isn't working?

after the IGNITION SW fuse is blown power is cut to almost everything. you can move the key to any position but you'll never get anything to change. no lights, no guages, no solenoid click. you can still turn on interior lights, and headlights maybe other things. but its not possible to even crank the engine anymore, becasue there has to be a short somewhere

meh

if you swap to an s14 alternator in your s13, and you modify the power cable to do so, you can no longer use S13 alternators

its a little swap issue that has not been addressed, so hopefully in the future no one makes the same mistake

you can put an s14 alternator in an s13, but only by modifying it, you can not put an s13 alternator into an s14, or a modifed s13 cable
