I drove the car a few blocks and i saw that the battery light was on. i was late for class so i just said **** it and turned around to replace my alternator. It was only showing 11 volts and 11 at idle.

replaced it. this is on a 92 S13, with S13 harness. however the motor is an S14 and i was using an S14 alternator. it worked fine, as it obviously should. However, i was replacing it with one of my s13 alternators.

replaced it, and when i went to fire it up, i cranked it and it just made a nasty noise. and when i went to crank it again and nothing, no starter click, no guages, no stereo, but the interior lights still work.

it blows the fusible link in the passenger side fuse box in the engine bay, the IGNITION SW 30 amp. reading the fsm shows that this only goes from the battery to the ignition. i have no idea where i could have developed a short, any ideas?

that obviously makes sense right

but, the alternator only has one tiny ground one large ground and the connector, its not really even possible to mess it up

the only thing i can think of is:you have to slightly enlarge the hole on the large ground on the alternator in order to use an s14 alternator in an s13. however, when using an s13 alternator with a modified ground would it really lose that much contact and cause this problem? there is a nut holding it down and it seats completely on the ground and is obviously connected to the stud, so i cant see any problem....

only thing i can think of is to put back in the s14 alternator and see if it blows the fuse...

but at 10 bucks a fuse i only have two more and i need one for each car....

its a small swap issue that hasnt been covered yet...

s13s need to modify the power cable to accept the S14 alternator. after this modification it is no longer possible to use an s13 alternator. the power cable will not connect to the stud right, and it will blow that fuse.

so for the sake of anyone who searches this:

it is possible to put an s14 alternator in an s13, but after drilling out the power cable

not possible to use an s13 alternator in an s14, or an s13 that has been modifed to accept the s14 alt without a homemade adapter

i just reliquished the opportunity to buy a 96 90 amp.... problem solved
