i have my head off right now.. and my pistons move side to side with effort.. and the cylinder walls are bright shiney silver, and are smooth. my friend said i have bad rings if my pistons move side to side like this.. but the walls i figured would say something..

Wow 1/4 inch? I'd say your rings are gone.

do this, go find a normal audio CD (not a single or such) and measure the width from one side to the other of the center hole. and tell us, what it measures as, using the same units of measurement AND measuring tool (whatever it was) you used to measure the piston movement, and then we'll know wtf unit of measurement you're using for sure.

the pistons should move somewhat... there isn't really a measurable ammount that is acceptable (because the difference between acceptable and not acceptable is so small). A ring isn't something that wears down like a brake pad. The difference between brand new and really frickin old is extremely small! The only real way to check ring condition is through a compression/leakdown test. BUT since you've already pulled the motor apart, replace your rings.

Pull your oil pan, undo the rod bolts, and punch out the pistons and rods. Replace rings, and rod bearings. Run a quick cylinder honing tool through there to clean it all up. Assemble everything, and have a nice motor

My pistons also moved easily by fingers from side to side about 1.5mm...Where to get cheap rings for CA (I admit I haven't searched yet). Here set of rings is around 210$

I can get you rings a lot cheaper than that. If interested, let me know. But for the other posts, don't use everyday meaurement tactics on your engine. Go and get the proper tools and do the proper measurements by the book. The piston will have very little movement in it's bore.

So if pistons really moved that much, what does it mean?

As for pistons & rings - I'm still trying to choose between stock pistons (and then I need new rings and forged pistons from JE or Arias. Aim would be to go to some 300whp (preferably with the turbo I have now - Mitsu EVOIII Big 16G).How much approx.would be set of stock rings from you?Thanx

Rings are $120 shipped. If your pistons have that much play, then 9 times out of 10 your bores are worn and you're up for an over-sized set of pistons. But unless your oil pump is worn, your wear is not over the limit.

if ur piston rings r gone u will know u should be blowing a bluey whity coulour smoke and a black smoke from ur turbo witch is ok u wont find one that doesnt burn up a bit of oil so i suggest u get some one to go behind u in a car and u give it a boot full and get them to tell u wat they c, if it is bluey whitish then yer it is ur ring or it also could be ur valve stem seals so basicly if ur piston rings move that much then yer its time to change them and i would consider checkin out ur valve stem seals if they feel hard or look dodgy i would advise u to change them while u have got the head of if u can afford to do it all at the same time (less hassel in the long run)
