Blown KA24E?

I have a '90 S13 with about 176K on the engine. Ever since i got it, it has had an oil leak problem. I usually go through about a quart a month, so i need to keep on it to make sure i'm not running dry. Well, yesterday i went to look at the oil level after hearing some un-happy noises, and found i had lost all my oil. I immedeately filled it back up again w/ 4 more quarts, but after driving it for only about 2 minutes I could tell it had big problems. There was a severe drop in power after 3K RPMs; i did a 0-60 time and got 26 seconds. After that things just got worse and worse: my oil light came on, my timing chain tensioner continually rattled like crazy, and my engine sounded like a diesel truck. All the signs of no oil pressure, but I had a full pan of oil.

My theory is this: When my engine ran dry the first time, some crap must have broken lose and gotten down into the oil pan. Then once I put more oil in, the random crap clogged up the little pump filter in the pan, keeping my engine from getting any oil.

As of now it won't start, but I was planning an SR swap mid april anyway... although it would be kinda nice to have a car for the next few months.

Any other thoughts on what could have gone wrong, and if it could be repairable?

Sounds like the oil pump is broken somehow.

I looked at the oil level, it is just above the "Max" mark. I think i'll pull the oil pan and see if i can find the problem in there... otherwise maybe it is the oil pump.

With the high mileage you have on the engine, you probably should replace the oil pump since you're going to all the trouble to pull the pan. However, it is very strange that now the engine won't start.... Nitro
