Went something like this VVVVVRRRRROOOOOMMMMM Poof. Cough Cough.

So I'm rebuilding I took the engine apart and the pistons and heads look almost new with 114000 on the motor I'm deffinatly going to have them ported and shaved has anyone done this how did it turn out.

What else can I do without changing the main parts of the engine i.e. cam, crank, piston heads, arms, no sr swap (not that I have anything against it)

I'm thinking, Injectors, turbo, intercooler, NOS. anyone have any experience with this stuff on the factory block. I think I read somewhere that the engine can handle up to 400hp. is that right?

Or What else can I do? What would you do if money wasn't to much of a problem.

Oh forgot this is my 90 240sx with the factory KA

With 100k+ miles on the engine I wouldn't run anything over 225-250hp on factory internals.

A turbo install is not a small undertaking and the most I would run on factory internals is 10psi, most likely 7 or 8. This is about the most you can get on the factory fuel system. With uprgaded injectors and fuel pump you could probably run 10-12psi reliably.

Your looking at about 4 grand plus installation there. This should yield around 225-250hp.

As far as nitrous goes, you could go with a 50 or 75 shot on factory fuel system from what I've heard. Dry, wet, your call.Aeries seems to like the NOS controller, and it's pretty good practice to take his advice. NX and a few others also make kits for your car.

Cams are always a good starting place, but you said you didn't want to do that so...

Anything more than that and you'll need to start replacing internals.

Enjoy, and keep us posted on your progress.

Changin the cam Hmmmmmm. I played with that idea but i'm not that good with adjusting the lifters. How hard would that be with the SOHC. What should I be looking for when picking one out. I just want mild modification something thats not to noticible. I'll probably skip the turbo for a little while and go with the NOS. How much does one of those controllers go for?

So I dropped my heads off at the machine shop. They are going to clean them, test them, shave, port, and polish. The total came to $407 with all the gaskets. Does anyone know if thats a good price that I got. I didn't relly shop around I just went to the shop that was the most trustworthy, that I've been shopping with, for a while now for my high performance parts.

Another question is does anyone know how many of those little sleaves that come out off the heads are. they go right were the main head bolts are. I took off the head I didn't notice them right away. Then I went under the car and saw one and wondered what it went to Then I found that thay seemed to go into the head were the bolt holes are. I found two off them and on the block there are only two spaces but on the head there are five spaces. Can someone help me with this.

Why's that? Having a high mileage motor in that of itself is not a problem. If the motor was well maintained, the compression and leak down are good, then there should really be no issues.

i would just go ahead and rebuild the whole engine. you don't want to put all the work into that engine just for the bottom end to go. depending how bad the HG blew and how much coolant went in the block you might end up having to do anyway in a few months. do these engines like to blow HG's? i mean if you blew a HG at 114k (and its a nissan not a ford) something might not be right and you may want to rebuild. thats all i have to say. good luck to you and your car.

I have noticed that these engines can take alot of abuse even after the HG Blows. I blew my HG on my malibu and it was over. But this engine still seems to be pretty strong and I cut off the engine and parked it like the minute it happend. I'll find out for sure soon enough I get the heads back in a couple days.

For one... stock fuel system and 10psi boost = KABOOM.

Secondly, SOHC motors aren't as beefy as the S14 KA24DEs. So boosting them is a different game. Obvious steps would be adequate intercooling, fuel, and sufficient airflow in and out of the motor. A low boost T3 turbo application should work fine for the SOHC. But a 10-12 psi T04E setup would kill the stock internals.

10 psi - you need to specify which size turbo we are talking about. 10-psi w/ a stock SR T25 is crap compaired to a TS04-60 at 10-psi.

Shaving the head does raise compression and is an old trick in the book. Be sure you don't over tax the cooling system on the car if you are running advanced timing as well. The aluminum head will soak up more heat now and as a result runs the greater risk of blowing the headgasket as well as warping the head. Resurfacing the head is a given since you blew the headgasket.

As for the Malibu comment, blowing a headgasket isn't a 1:1 thing. You can put a pinhole in the gasket and have coolant or oil leaking out of the head or it can leak into the cylinder. Both will cause the motor to run poorly, more so with oil/coolant mix in the chamber. But not all headgasket failures are the same is my point.

Nitrous and boost isn't a good mix when combined w/ a turbo application for 90% of the people here. It's complex to tune with the weather variables and easily can go wrong.

Thanks for the info. right now I'm going to stick with bigger fuel injectors and a 75 shot of NOS. I can't afford a controller so I'm going to have to be real carefull. With th bigger fuel injectors should I put a bigger fuel pump. I do have an electric holly fuel pump laying around.

Also the cooling issue. I belive I overlooked that. I'm replacing the fan for an elctric one. Is there anything else I can do to keep it cool. maybe a better water pump or something. Intercooler is not in my price range unless I can find a good used one.

Intercooler is a turbo or supercharger system item.

Go with a larger radiator.

I'm still waiting to get my heads back. I went outside to clean the engine a little I was looking at some bolts that I put on top where the windshield wipers are at and I don't remember what they went too. I hope I remember when I get my head back.

Ok so I got the head back on and the engine together. but it doesnt feel right I don't know how to explain it. It's still kind of loud in the lifters. and I'm still seeing green goo coming out of the engine after I changed the oil twice. Do I need to flush the engine with something or what. and it doesn't seem to have alot of power. I only drove it around the block like twice. I'm not losing any antifreeze. I didn't have any extra parts and I torqed everything down to spec. I also took out the manual fan and put an electric one in and it still kinda gets hot. it dosent cut off on me anymore. maybe I should also mention I don't have a muffler on it. I'm thinking it has to do something with the timing. I put the crank on the red mark at T.D.C. the distributor said #1 as well, I matched up the cam to what it said in the book. but I don't think it's right. I think I'm like 1 link off of were I should be. Does anyone know were I can get a pic of what It should look like when the cam is at #1. I think thats were my problem is.

I'm stuck at work till 11 so I can't get to the shop to look at it till tomarro thanks for the help in advance.

Wow, frankly, it sounds like you don't really have that much engine rebuild experience. I suggest you take it to a competent professional and have it looked at, when you start rebuilding for the second time maybe it's time someone experienced looked at it. And for the love of god use the search function, 99% of your original questions would have been answered if you had done your research, all the info has been discussed ad nauseum.

trpower7 your right I don't have that much rebuilding experience. But it doesn't mean that I'm incompentent with rebuilding an engine. The reasons why I ask questions is to get as many opinons as I can. I'm also only rebuilding the engine because it doesn't feel right. The residual gunk left in the engine went away when I flushed it and changed the oil again. and it stoped smoking. But I still want to rebuild it again just because I'm going to enter this car in track racing and I can't afford to have anything go wrong when I'm out there. If I have to I'll rebuild it again the day of the race to make sure that every nut and bolt is perfect and that every mechanical item is strong enough to handle it and I'll rebuild it 100 times over until I know that engine like the back of my hand and I know what the limits are. I'm on here to get other peopls opinons. Not because I don't know what I'm doing but because it's smarter to get as much information as I can from as many people as I can before I enter something I've never done. Wouldn't you agree?
