in late febuary my catalytic converter was replaced (wouldnt pass inspection). After it passed, I rippied my exhaust off and put a side pipe on (1991 baisically stock 240). Earlier this week i heard a rattle coming from around where my cat was, so i figured the heat shield had "crapped" the bed. upon further inspection (and some removal of the heat shield) I have determined that the rattling is now coming from inside my catalytic converter. on top of this, my exhaust tone has been changed from a low growl into a tapping whistle kind of noise. Also, the car now has very little power, as well as a jerky acceleration. is it possible for the inside of my catalytic converter to implode into a ball of crap that is now plugging my pipe? by the way, i searched and found nothing on this topic.

yes..... it can clogg up causing a restriciton. Either replace it, or take it off, knock out the crap and wait until you can afford a new one (for emissions I presume?, otherwise just leave it like it is.

Cheap cats can do this........... so remove the crap (It will sound better anyway)

I too have this current problem. I replaced my straight pipe with a Carquest aftermarket cat and it's making tons of noise. I thought it was an exhaust leak at first, but it sounds like there are BB's inside my cat. =[
