Hi everyone, I'm trying to work out some electrical problems while my DE is at the machine shop. I honestly have no idea about the history of this car, except that it has 123k and the last inspection was in '99(VA). There is no motor in the engine bay FYI. I have removed a dealer-installed alarm(dealer, based on the quality of installation)
Ok, I'll try to keep this as clear as possible... The blower relay should only be energized when the key is in accessory or run. Basically what happens is this: when I put the key in, turn to ACC, the relay energizes, and the AC/H button lights come on. The blower will turn on, and the vent doors work fine.
When I remove the key, the lights go out, but the relay *stays* on. The blower/vent motors are in-operable(OK). I can pull the relay, and plug it back in, and it will just re-energize. 12V remains on the green wire to the relay. The only way to turn off this relay is to disconnect the battery. When I reconnect the batt, with key out, the relay will remain off(untill I put key in, turn to ACC).
SO, have disconnected the following things, and it does not help. Something is keeping this green wire 'latched' on. The timing control unit and seat belt timer are on the same fuse, so I disconnected them. I also unplugged the ECU because when it's connected, only one AC/H button lights up(dimly), and latches on even with key out(after turning to ACC, like above). I think the ECU may be toast anyways...
Now here's the kicker. With everyone above unplugged, if I remove the instrument cluster, the relay turns on/off as expected!(with with the button lights/blower). I have the HUD display, and it wasn't working right anyways. So I replaced the cluster/harness with an analog from a '93 DE. It does the same thing! If I remove either cluster, the relay works as normal.
With the guages out and relay in, the current draw from the battery is 0A when key is out. If I install my guages, the current draw is 0.3A at ACC, 0.5A at run, and 0.3A with key out.
I know this is a stretch, but anyone here have/had similar problems? I would appreciate any input/suggestions There are some other minor problems, but I'll exclude them for now for clarities sake.
Thanks for reading!-Jamie
