I have a '95 240 and I got a nice knock/rattle when my origional timing chain tensioner sploded and cloged my oil pickup. I pulled the engine and swapped in a junkyard engine while I rebuilt the origional. I sent the head off and had it completely re-built by a trusted local. put the engine back in the car and started it. Same racket as before so I thought I needed to replace the bottom end, Pulled the engine and when I took off the cam cover I found thet I had no oil on the top end at all. I had fresh oil in the filter, but nothing in the head at all. I'm thinking maybe part of the old head gasket may have gotten into the passages and clogged it.

Is there an easy way to test this theory? any other suggestions would be great

You can blow the passages out with compressed air and see if u have blockage. Also you can get some really corse pipe cleaners from advanced abrasives and try cleaning the debris out. Also u may want to pull ur mains and rod caps and make sure u didn't suffer any bearing damage from the startup.

yeah, I turned the engine outside of the car and oil went straight to the filter, it's after the filter that there's a problem.

So the head is off, should I force the compressed air into the oil ports at the front of the cams? or somewhere else?

Thanks for the input.
