Can anyone tell me the difference (if any) in a 1st generation and 2nd generation VH45DE 'block' as I don't have a manual to compare the differences.

It appears that there are NO block differences [90-96] just the heads on up...........except the chain guides external to the block.

But we have never changed a 94-95-96 engine yet [nor pulled the heads on one], examination of a trashed 96 Q engine [in the car oil pan off showed the same bearing girdle and components as far as I could see.].

Whether early heads will bolt on to a later block is unknown!

Someone could just ask Joe the next time they place an order. The short block has it's own part number, like everything else. They'll be able to tell you if it's the same part or not. But if it's not, perhaps any differences would be minor enough that they could be interchanged.1st gen displacement is 4.494L, borexstroke is 93x82.7mm.

My parts list shows a different part# for 02/93 and up vs 89-01/93 short block assembly.

Q45tech,

You second guessed my next question, which was going to be, can I fit the 1990 heads from my spare engine on the 94 engine in my car.

Looks like there is only one way to find out. Trial and error.

My understanding is that the first generation heads are easier to flow test and in standard trim have slightly more low down torque.

Rather than pull the whole engine out, I was looking at swapping just the heads and fitting a mild cam to match the Supercharger.

Before I look at swapping the heads entirley, are there any differences in the camshafts, or are they identical.

According to service manuals [90-95 Q engines have the same cam duration [248 degrees] on both intake and exhaust] unfortunately that doesn't tell you if the lift or cam shape [how fast the ramp up is to open and close] is the same. The 96 cams have less duration!

Q45tech,

I suppose a good starting point would be the part number.

Does the 1st generation and 2nd generation cams have identical part numbers?
