I have everything out of my 240sx. Ready to start looking for motors. It is going to be an RB for sure. I was wondering if it would be cheaper to get a bare block and build it up or just buy a used motor and still replace parts.

I found a new RB26 block for about $1200. I'm thinking that a block build would be cheaper. Has anyone done a complete block build? Does anyone have or know of a list of parts needed to build from a bare block? Would it be hard to find all of the parts?

I've read that a VG30DETT transmission is pretty strong. Is it as strong as everyone says? I would like to use that transmission and attach it to the RB26 because it is cheap.

The reason I want to do a build, I feel that if I buy the motor and change parts it would be a waste of money and I would be stuck with a bunch of used parts that no one wants.

Also, i have some old 95 240sx parts ready to be sold. I will put a list in the classifieds. Thanks for all of your input.

Ok first off, parts for the RB are far from cheap. In fact, they are probably the most expensive Japanese parts you can buy besides 2JZ parts and even that is debatable in some cases.

Second, if you try to assemble an RB26 from scratch, you are going to spend upwards of $15,000 just for the motor, aftermarket parts, and machine work. Obviously, you do not have connections because you are looking at spending $1200 on a bare block.

If you decide you want to do a build from the bottom up, you better find someone local in Japan or Australia who can get junkyard parts for you. And hell, if you're doing a bottom up build, why would you want an RB26 block? Get a frickin RB30 block and RB26 head and build a REAL monster.

Otherwise, stick with buying an RB26 motorset and gradually build it to the power level that you're happy with. Plus, that way you'll have time to scrounge up cash in between mods.

AND, you would be surprised of the demand for stock RB parts. I sold everything I swapped out of mine that was worth anything including a stock boost solenoid for $5.

buying a bare block especially a rb26 one and sourcing all the parts is going to cost you a fist full.

Block - $1200 + shipping that beastGridle - if it doesnt come with onemain bolts - Crank - $$$$Rods - $600-1200Rod boltsBearings (main and rod)SensorsBrackets for misc thingsGasketsPumpsOil panOil pick upPistons

And thats just the lower rotating assembly. Thats not including the head, manifolds, turbo(s), eletrical, wiring, and ecu. It'll add up all to quick.

If your looking for a running start on a RB build email me [email protected] I might be able to get you in the right direction with a motor.

Good luck

Thanks for the help guys. I needed a opinion. My friend mention the idea to me and I just wanted to hear more than one persons opinion.

Oh yeah I forgot it was a N1 Block.

How much would you let the RB25 go for? What do you have?

You guys are leaving out the machine shop labor. RB26 head work in not exactly a cheap expense there! If you do not buy a complete setup, I guarantee you will spend months if not years hunting down all the parts.

By the way, how does one become a member of the NRRBA - Non-Running RB Association?

Pay your $50/yr dues to Coolwhip the Treasurer who flips 75% of it to the former VP, who sends the rest into corporate; AKA my own personal bank account. jk. It's pretty much self-declared and competitively based on how long you have had your RB not running. I think Sil240 is still president and Lonestar is VP now I think. haha god I'm a loser for knowing that!

Aw crap! You made me look back at a photo of when I set in the RB20. July 2003! That RB20 block is still sitting on the side of the house. The RB30 block followed soon after. Damn! 4 years already and still lots of work to go.
