Wats going on guys...

One of my first posts here. I been leeching info off these sites for months ... but im happy to be here. I wanted to ask advice on piston, ring, rods, valve train and or block metal surface treatments ect. Prior to motor assembly. I mean what are some old tricks that you guys as expert engine builders have, that are willing to share good results with?

Cryogenic freeze? up to what parts (valve train too,? clutches,? diffs, and or rotors?)is worth it? freezing any thing that wears... im crazy enough to do a full transmission...

What should be done prior to boring, since certain treatments only penetrate .010" to .020"?

WPC treatments seem great like on the SR20 DVD? teflon? how much can we have?

How about shot peening? rods, knife edge gin cranks or nitrite?

Now lets talk about stroker kits available out the... for the SR. Lets say the Jun configuration with cosworth pistons? what kind coatings do they have? what does jun do to their cranks? i know sr cranks are very strong.. but i just want know.

I know many of these treatments are to improve the engines all around performance but what could be bad under too much boost? physics tell me that cryogenic seems good but it might make metal brittle... and heating with constant engine stress might not be great if mixed with teflon coated pistons... i might be wrong here.. its just an example.

I understand that all out race cars get heavy secrets like these that make the difference, so id like to learn more. Please don't consider, if this is for a street car or drift car, drag etc... id like to learn about pricing of the treatments if possible... or may be a simple formula to call it a day that you guys know are enough to have fun with any motor an general could be an RB, VK... (Yes, you can say i am trying to build nuclear bomb proof motors )

I am also going to help a friend install his Tomei Pro cams soon, hes got the works... solids, titanium retainers and crower springs etc., i gotta help him shim it and cut the rockers so they fit. Were going to do in on the block, i told him to wait until he does the whole motor to polish, and may be do bigger valves, or sum thing funky. Should i tell him to send his cams to get a little cooled before he drops them? considering when you do a treatment like that, they do at the same time, minor bolts and random misc. parts for a few bux each?

I very curious to know what kid of extras i can throw on my future overhauls, and when i benefit my friends with advice.

Thank you, and happy to be here again.

Do you have an idea of what internals you'll be using? If you're using forged bits like rods and pistons, cryo treating and shot peening won't gain you too much extra IMO. If you were reusing the old stock equipment, that would be different.

On my build, I just used whatever coatings were already on my parts. I didn't go out of my way to get extra things done. I find most times, the extra coatings are good for a little while, but they wear off, or worse, flake off.

Karmakaze had cryo treated a lot of his internals, so if he could pop his head in here, he could give you some extra insight.

dude... well said. Thank you for replying.

In the back of my head, i always thought about how the treatments could wear off, but your right... when reusing old parts, they could be benefited from a lil cryo. I'm sure many of the manufactures out there, do plenty of testing on what coatings should go on their pistons and etc. I'm just looking at doing any thing before hand. That i don't want to regret in the future.

As far as what internals ill be using... I've had a blacktop sitting around in my storage for about 3 years now... since my 240 was stolen in Orlando and i don't know what to really build the motor for. Long story, i recovered it, they only got my kouki headlights, radiator, ECU, engine harness, yellow top battery, and all the interior. I got all my suspension back (kazama rods every where) same for wheels, also got back z32 brakes which i sold with the KA and transmission to a friend. That ended up rebuilding it as i was doing a red top for another friend. At the same time we also had a CA in his garage... very good times in there... all three motors broken down debating why each engine is unique and rules over the others . I might have some pics to post, ill look around.

If i ever get around to breaking down my block. I'm very interested in that jun stroker, tomei valvetrain, some good *** tunning may be E8 or AEM... IMO every out there that goes crazy with bores... doesn't succeed. Stroke is where its at.. haha If i pick and match rods, crank, pistons etc. Its almost the same price as a tomei or jun stroker and i'm sure they know what they are doing... or they would of made a sr24-5 stroker if it was right to them...

Do you know what part Karmakaze froze? because i have heard from old hot rodders that it make some parts bridle
