If you consider the ability to make more peak hp an upgrade, then yes a thicker gasket can theoretically be considered an upgrade. To me, if you want a lower c/r, build your motor. If you want a metal gasket, stick to stock spec. I will never consider a thicker metal gasket an 'upgrade'...maybe a band-aid, but that's it.

In my original post, I did not mention thickness of the head gasket , just the material. Read the ****ing post and don't put words in my mouth. And Ken, in a recent conversation, told me that if he had it to do all over again, he would use ARP headstuds. Call him and ask him if you don't believe me.

Also, anybody with some sense knows that a thicker head gasket lowers the compression ratio. No one is disputing that. I consider an upgrade something that is more reliable and better constructed. You can use a metal headgasket with the same thickness that would still withstand more boost than the stock head gasket right? It doesn't have to be thicker to be an upgrade. You talk to people like you are all knowing but you just come of as a **** head.

First off, I felt you did mention thickness...not directly, but it certainly seemed that you eluded to it. My reasons? Well, I had never mentioned anything (prior to your posts) about the materials used. If you had read my posts correctly (which I assumed), it would have been clear to you that I had only mentioned my views on THICKER gaskets. You then 'disputed' my views by by saying that they, thicker metal headgaskets (the only item in discussion mind you) can be considered an upgrade due to their ability to allow for more boost. What am I supposed to think? Why would you even post that if you uderstood what I was saying? As for your conversation with Ken, I could care less. You mentioned that anyone running at or over 350 hp HAD to change their head bolts. Well that's just wrong and all I did was give you an example to prove that.

Correct, I never disputed that though.

Correct again, but others felt that thicker is better b/c of the resulting drop in compression. I was talking to them...trying to help them understand what happens when you upgrade to a thicker gasket and lose compression.

:thumbd I never said anything of the sort and would never claim to be 'all knowing'. If I had to refer to myself as anything, it would be 'always learning'. I find it ironic that you are making personal attacks when I never said anything derogatory towards you or anyone else.

I apologize for the last statement. That was a personal attack and I'm sorry about that. I just felt like you were putting words in my mouth and I don't like that. I didn't intentionally elude to the thickness of the gasket. Sorry if I did not communicate that clearly.

I think this is just a case of not understanding what each other was trying to say.

Sorry if I offended you.

I actually dont mind being proven wrong, better to be corrected than belive in something false. You cant let a petty argument get between two people here for the same reason: Nissans

Im sure there are no hard feelings.

stock headgasket thickness is 1.1mm;

says so in the Apexi headgasket 'instructions'

0.8mm = 8.7 (gasket takes up 4.8cc per cyl)1.1mm = 8.5 (6.5cc)1.5mm = 8.2 (8.9cc)1.8mm = 8.1 (10.7cc)

instead I found one from the source...

http://www.apexi.co.jp/product....html

its near the bottom, and make sure you look at the specs for the 86mm bore not 87.

SR Beast- I do not want to get in the middle of all of this dilema :p But my feelings are that once its open you might as well go with arp studs and MHG. However you must know there is a lot of good info in this thread about compression and what not; but i am surprised at a few things. Regardless of what someone has done on stock bolts or stock HG, we all do not have the time and money of dyno's/perfectly safe tuning and more importantly the $ to do it over again (considering you are going to be pushing this motor). That is my feeling only though; we all know "to each his/her own"

One- if you are going with a metal HG it is probably wise to resurface the head as smooth (mirror) and level as possible (trusting machige shop) simply because a MHG won't seal correctly if the surfaces aren't prepped correctly. In doing so you will end up taking some material out of the head...which can be "regained' in a sense by matchign the head gasket thickness. Going a tiny bit thicker as in 1.2mm or so may actually leave you with stock compression depending on how much is taken out of the head for resurfacing.

MHG+ARP studs + proper prep and install = very potential SR20:ylsuper
